The Green Mountain .36 caliber 42" barrel is 13/16" octagon. Rifled with eight equal lands and grooves with a 1 in 48" twist for a patched round ball. The bore is bright and has been well maintained. Green Mountain Muzzle Loading Rifle Barrels are machined from high quality American made bar stock, A.I.S.I. 1137 modified, stress relieved, annealed, certified rifle barrel quality steel. All barrels are drilled from solid stock, reamed to a high degree of smoothness, then optically checked for straightness. Very close tolerances are maintained. The barrel is finished to a brown with the edges worn to a silvery gray from handling. The breech finish shows some wear from firing and cleaning. The front sight is a nickel silver blade in a brass base. The rear sight is a flat top sight dovetailed 8" ahead of the breech.
The architecture and overall look of the rifle appears to have been influenced by guns of Dauphin County with a gentle curve on the comb of the buttstock. The gently curved buttplate has a late 18th century style. The brass patchbox is correctly mounted with steel screws and has been hand engraved with traditional folk art designs. The door has a cam over center spring and opens with finger pressure to reveal a small cavity for storage.
Our top view of the gun shows off the slightly tapered comb and raised carving where the comb and wrist transition together. The carving has a few areas with a fuzzy background, but overall is well done. The wrist sweeps up into the lock panels. The lock panels are framed with raised and incised carving. From below a long brass toeplate is installed. The brass triggerguard is properly pinned into position, and the bow is accented with engraving. The wooden ramrod of the rifle is held in place by three brass ramrod pipes. The pipes have been finished with octagon flats with incised rings on the ends. The 5/16" diameter wooden ramrod is finished with a barber pole design and fitted with a brass tip with 8-32 threads to accept loading and cleaning accessories. A brass muzzle cap protects the end grain of the stock. The sideplate is a classic Peter Berry design and is secured with a single lock bolt. The raised carving on the wrist continues into the front of the cheek piece. The cheek is inlaid with a brass hunter's star. The inletting around the star has a few gaps. To the rear of the cheek the stock is decorated with raised and incised carving.
Ignition for the rifle is provided by this neatly browned L&R percussion lock. Finished to match the barrel, the lock is properly tuned and assembled. The internal springs are good and strong, giving the lock a nice snappy action. The drum is fitted with a 1/4-28 threaded nipple with a brass flash cup to direct the cap spray away from the barrel and wood at the breech. Double lever double set triggers are tuned to fire in any sequence; you may cock the lock or set the trigger in any combination. Adjust the screw between the two triggers, inboard to reduce set trigger release pressure, our outboard to require a stronger pressure. The set trigger can provide very light release, perhaps an ounce or two, for accurate aimed shooting during pleasant weather.
