This percussion halfstock rifle is stocked in curly maple, and trimmed in a mixture of iron and nickel silver furniture. The rifle is fitted with a Siler percussion lock and a .45 caliber Rice barrel. This rifle is offered in used condition, with a well maintained bore. Weight is 9.4 pounds and the rifle has a trigger reach of 14" making it well suited for today's average to taller size shooter.

The .45 caliber 33-1/2" Rice barrel is 15/16" straight octagon. The bore is rifled with seven lands and square bottom grooves with a 1:66 twist for a tightly patched round ball. The bore is bright and has been well maintained. The barrel is finished to a chocolate brown and is signed P. Sheets 38 in front of the rear sight. The left oblique flat is stamped with the barrel manufacturer's information 15/16 1-66sq R45 near the breech. Rice Muzzle Loading Rifle Barrels are set between centers and milled octagonal, insuring a centered bore. Each barrel is stress relieved in an atmosphere controlled electric furnace, to eliminate work hardening or barrel warp, and to dampen harmonic vibrations or barrel whip. After the rifling has been cut, each bore is "ball burnished". A carbide bore-sizing die is pulled through the barrel, to insure bore dimension uniformity, eliminating any tight or loose spots inside the barrel. This critical procedure leaves the top of the lands smooth and polished, equaling the traditional lead lapping procedure. Rice barrels are Match grade quality, with bench rest capability. Rice barrels do not require lapping or extensive shooting to break-in. The barrel is fitted with a browned iron blade front sight dovetailed 1-1/2" behind the muzzle and a flat top rear sight dovetailed 7-3/4" ahead of the breech.

The maple stock has nice curl throughout and is stained an amber brown with gloss finish. The stock has only fair shaping, inletting, and finishing, with a few small dings from normal use. The buttstock is fitted with a nickel silver crescent buttplate to engage the shooter's shoulder in 19th century style. A long browned muzzle cap protects the end grain of the stock. The beaver tail shaped tang of the breech plug mounts with one domed tang bolt that engages the trigger plate below, the rear is a wood screw. A small steel pin retains the barrel to the forearm. The toe of the rifle is fitted with a wide browned iron toeplate with beaver tail finial mounted with two steel screws. The nickel silver triggerguard bow has a finger spur, and the rear of the grip rail has a curled spoon. The wooden ramrod is fitted with a brass loading tip threaded to accept 8-32 cleaning and loading accessories. The ramrod passes through a browned iron entry pipe and two nickel silver ramrod pipes soldered to the barrel's under rib. A large beaver tail cheek is formed on the left side of the buttstock and the single lock bolt passes through a simple washer style nickel silver sideplate.

Sure-fire ignition is provided by a Jim Chambers' Siler Mountain caplock. The plate is polished bright, and has a strong mainspring for fast lock time. The hammer is blued and was bent to align with the stainless steel 1/4-28 percussion nipple for No. 11 cap that is screwed into the snail breech. The R.E. Davis double lever double set triggers will only fire from the set position. The front trigger does not engage the sear. You may set the triggers before, or after cocking the lock. Adjust the screw between the two triggers, inboard to reduce set trigger release pressure, our outboard to require a stronger pressure. The set trigger can provide a very light release, perhaps an ounce or two, for accurate aimed shooting during pleasant weather.
