This longrifle is very utilitarian in nature. Stocked in curly maple the rifle is trimmed in brass furniture with a 38" swamped barrel and L&R Classic flintlock. The rifle is used and has been very well maintained. Stocked with a trigger reach of 14-1/4" for a larger or taller shooter, and an overall weight of just 7 pounds.

The 38" swamped octagon barrel is thickest at the breech for strength, tapers to a narrow waist, and flares at the muzzle. The .50 caliber bore is cut rifled with seven round bottom grooves with a caliber appropriate 1 in 66" slow twist for patched round ball. Rice Muzzle Loading Rifle Barrels are set between centers and milled octagon, ensuring a centered bore, concentric with the exterior, with no "run-out". Each barrel is stress relieved in an atmosphere-controlled electric furnace to eliminate work hardening or barrel warp and to dampen harmonic vibrations or barrel whip.

After the rifling has been cut, each bore is "ball burnished". A carbide bore-sizing die is pulled through the barrel to ensure bore dimension uniformity, eliminating any tight or loose spots inside the barrel. This critical procedure leaves the top of the lands smooth and polished, equaling the traditional lead lapping procedure. Rice barrels are Match grade quality. Rice barrels do not require lapping or extensive shooting to break-in. The barrel is finished to a dark chocolate brown. A flat top rear sight is dovetailed 11-1/2" ahead of the breech. A brass front sight is dovetailed 2" behind the muzzle.

The maple is stained to amber brown with darker figure. The buttstock is shaped with angular lines often associated with Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. The buttplate has a modest curve to engage the shoulder. The flared tang of the breech is fitted with a single tang bolt into the triggerplate below. Lock panels correctly taper widest at the rear. Notice the slight cast-off, putting the centerline of the stock away from the right hand shooter's cheek. This geometry places the line of sights directly behind your eye, almost instinctively. A longrifle with cast-off seems to fit nearly every right hand shooter. The barrel is secured with thee steel wedge keys. These are fitted without escutcheon plates and are very neatly fitted.

No toeplate has been installed. Subject to contact with the ground when loading and cleaning, the toe commonly collects small dents and dings from use. Moving forward along the stock, the bottom flat slowly tapers in, finally disappearing below the brass triggerguard. The triggerguard is mounted with a pins in late longrifle fashion. Three brass ramrod pipes support the 3/8" diameter ramrod. The brass tip is threaded 8-32 to accept loading and cleaning accessories. A brass muzzle cap is fitted to protect the end grain of the stock. The side panel is fitted with a flush mounted brass sideplate that fills the side panel in Germanic style.

Ignition for the rifle is provided by this L&R Classic flint lock. This lock has the classic styling of locks from the 1760-1800 era. The cam action angle of the tumbler engages the mainspring. This really speeds lock time. Turned bearing surfaces on the tumbler and sear minimize friction, essential during cold weather hunting. Improved cock geometry allows a shorter stroke, with better sparks thrown Fast ignition is assured by the stainless steel vent liner, positioned well above the bottom of the pan, centered on the heat of the flash. If your flint longrifle suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay, study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash.
