The .50 caliber 7/8" straight octagon barrel is 38-1/2" long, and is cut rifled with eight lands and grooves with a slow twist for a tightly patched round ball. The barrel has aged to a textured brown-gray patina. A flat top rear sight is dovetailed 8" ahead of the breech. A silver blade front sight set in a brass base is dovetailed 2" behind the muzzle. The top flat is signed L Cardroy 83 behind the rear sight. A single bolt passes through the flared tang and engages the trigger plate below. Three small iron pins retain the barrel to the forearm.
This flint fullstock longrifle is trimmed in brass, which has aged to a dark mellow patina. The stock is finished to a dark brown and rubbed back to reveal a golden undertone. The stock has many small handling marks from field use. The brass buttplate is modestly curved, comfortable to aim, it engages your shoulder to minimize the felt recoil of this .50 caliber rifle. The buttplate comb is shaped with five flats and a wedding band. The brass patchbox has "cyclops" horse head finial, and is mounted with a combination of small screws and iron nails. The patchbox door easily opens to reveal a shallow cut cavity for flints, patches, and other accessories. The patchbox is lightly engraved, and has aged to a dark mellow patina. Two lines of incised carving run along the toe line of the buttstock from the buttplate to the triggers creating a slimming effect. The top view shows a few lines of incised carving flowing back from the tang.
Our bottom view of the rifle shows that no toeplate is fitted to help protect this delicate area of the stock when loading. The brass triggerguard is pinned to the stock in traditional fashion. No muzzle cap is fitted on this rifle. The 3/8" diameter hickory ramrod is fitted with a brass tip with 8-32 threads to mount loading and cleaning accessories. We note the ramrod extends 1/2" past the muzzle. The ramrod is decorated with a barber pole design, and is held in place with two brass octagon shaped ramrod pipes with bands on each end, and matching entry pipe. The long skirt of the entry pipe is retained with two small brass nails. The square cheek is decorated with two lines of incised carving. Two domed head lock bolts pass through the brass sideplate to engage the lock on the opposite side.
This rifle is fitted with an L&R Durs Egg flintlock. This lock is a fine London design. Cock jaws direct sparks into the semi-waterproof pan with rain gutters. The fancy frizzen pan cover flange seals the pan. The fancy “frictionless" tumbler and sear have raised bearing rings turned around screw holes, preventing moving parts from rubbing the plate or bridle. Sometimes called a “ghosted" lock, since you can see through the frictionless parts, when viewed from above. We recommend our 3/4" knapped flints for use with this lock. Below the lock a set of double lever, double set triggers has been installed. The triggers are properly tuned to fire from the set, or unset position. Adjust the screw between the two triggers, inboard to reduce set trigger release pressure, our outboard to require a stronger pressure. Fast ignition is assured by the stainless vent liner, positioned well above the bottom of the pan, centered on the heat of the flash. If your flint longrifle suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay, study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash.
