Constructed in the manner of those longrifles originally built in York County, Pennsylvania. The maple stock is stained to a reddish brown and finished to best display the figure. The rifle is trimmed in brass furniture, and the buttstock is fitted with a sliding wooden patchbox. The Jim Chambers Golden Age flintlock and barrel are both finished to a dark brown with some wear from handling and cleaning. Weighing in at 8 pounds, the rifle has a trigger reach of 13-1/2", well suited for today's average sized shooter.
A .50 caliber 42" swamped barrel is thickest at the breech, tapers to a narrow waist, and flares at the muzzle. Cut rifled with seven deep grooves in a slow twist for patched round ball. The bore is bright and has been well maintained. The swamped barrel is finished with a pleasing dark brown. The flat-top rear sight is mounted 13" ahead of the breech. Shooters with "older" eyes or corrective lenses will find the extra breech distance easier to use. A nickel silver blade front sight mounted in a copper base is mounted 1-1/2" behind the muzzle.
This rifle shows a blend of Germanic and English influence common on rifles from the York County, Pennsylvania region. The stock is stained to a reddish brown and the figure can be seen on the forearm and the sliding wood patchbox door. The bullet shaped patchbox is notched at the base with thumb relief. To release the door compress the spring toward the lid and slide the door to the rear. Beneath the door is a deep cavity to store flints, jags, or other shooting accessories. The brass buttplate is well fitted to the stock. The buttplate comb is shaped with five octagon flats and a wedding band transition. Ahead of the comb the wrist sweeps up to the flared tang of the breech.
No toeplate is fitted to this rifle. The bottom flat of the stock narrows from the toe as it transitions beneath the lock panels. The brass triggerguard has been neatly finished with well defined flats. The triggerguard is secured in position with a combination of pin and screw in early fashion. The ramrod pipes are octagon with raised rings at the ends for strength. The entry pipe skirt tapers to a point in English fashion. A 3/8" diameter ramrod serves the barrel, the end is fitted with a steel tip with 8-32 threads to accept loading and cleaning accessories. An English influenced sideplate is retained by two dome headed lock bolts that pass through the plate and stock to engage the lock on the opposite side.
Ignition is provided by this Jim Chambers' Golden Age flint lock. Fitted with a heavy mainspring, the lock sparks very well when combined with our hand knapped 3/4" flints. The lock is finished to a dark brown finish to match the barrel. The breech end of the barrel does display some wear from the frizzen, which can happen from over tightening the front lock bolt. A wide curled single trigger is fitted to this rifle. The trigger is shaped with a decorative scroll back. A stainless steel vent liner is well centered on the pan of the lock. If your flint longrifle suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay, study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash.
In excellent condition, this contemporary longrifle will be a joy to shoot! The lucky buyer will own a treasure that will last a lifetime, and his heirs will raise toasts to his good taste, far into the future. Order it for a ten day visual inspection. You will be delighted. Else if it does not fit you, return it in unfired condition for same-day refund. Postage is your only risk, when you order any one-of-a-kind gun from Track, whether new, used, or antique.
