This Berks County, Pennsylvania style percussion conversion rifle is stocked in a figured maple with brass furniture. This 1810 to 1820 styled rifle would be typical for a longrifle converted to percussion post 1830 and carried for the Westward expansion. This rifle is very neatly fitted and finish and is in as-new condition. The barrel is signed T. Gray. Trigger reach is 13 3/4", ideal for today's average shooters. This rifle weighs 9 pounds.
The .36 caliber 15/16"" straight octagon barrel is 35" in length. The bore is bright and clean, cut rifled with eight lands and grooves with a caliber appropriate 1 in 48" rate of twist for patched round balls. The barrel finish is a smooth brown. A flat top rear sight is dovetailed 81/2" from the breech, and a brass front sight is dovetailed behind the muzzle. Green Mountain Barrels are machined from high quality American made bar stock, A.I.S.I. 1137 modified, stress relieved, annealed, certified rifle barrel quality steel. All barrels are drilled from solid stock, reamed to a high degree of smoothness, then optically checked for straightness. Very close tolerances are maintained.
This stock is stained to a golden brown with darker patches of figure. The stock is very well finished with a smooth satin sheen to the finish. The brass furniture has well finished crisp hand filed flat and is burnished bright. Regular use will give this rifle a very attractive patina. The brass patchbox head is mounted with three polished and fire blued screws, with the slots neatly aligned. The door is secured with a push button release in the comb of the buttplate. The cap box has a deep cut cavity for storing flints, jags, or other shooting accessories. The cheek is angled to the rear, to recoil away from your face, an ingenious feature found on better rifles. The short tang tapers to a point and is very well inlet. The buttplate and tang bolts slots are all neatly aligned. The lock panels are very well shaped with the upper edge at the line created by the side and quarter flat. The forearm just wraps the barrel. The 15/16" octagon barre with the smaller caliber gives this rifle a very period appearance. Antique rifles were often made with larger octagon barrels in the 18th and 19th century.
The toe of the rifle is fitted with a brass toeplate with pointed finial, secured with three fire blued screws. The brass triggerguard has crisp filed flats which only hand polishing can produce. Three ramrod pipes secure the 5/16" diameter ramrod to the rifle. The ramrod is fitted with a steel tip with 8-32 threads while the other end is fitted with a brass band to secure the end grain. A brass muzzle cap protects the end grain of the stock. The side panel is fitted with a flush mounted brass sideplate that supports the single lock bolt, in late flintlock fashion.
This rile is fitted with a Siler Mountain caplock that has been modified to give the appearance of a square tail English trade lock that has been converted to percussion. The lock plate has been drilled, tapped, and small filler screws places to give the impression of filled holes from a lock that had the frizzen and frizzen spring removed. Best quality trade flintlocks were often converted to percussion, during the 1830 - 1840 transition period. The hammer has also been neatly reshaped. A small brass flash cup helps direct cap spray away from the breech end of the barrel. The lock is finished to a dark brown to match the barrel. The double lever double set triggers are properly tuned to fire from the set or unset position. You may cock the lock or set the triggers in any sequence.
