The .36 caliber barrel is fitted with a patridge style front sight, with the front painted orange for visibility. The factory rear sight has a square notch and is windage and elevation adjustable. Note this is the early sight and the set screw for the windage adjustment is on the front side of the riser. You have to lift the riser completely up to adjust that set screw. If you adjust the windage when locked it will mark up the windage screw. The bore of the barrel is bright and appears to be in excellent well maintained condition. The breech is fitted with a 12-28 threaded stainless steel nipple. The blue finish displays some marks from use. The early ramrod pipes do not have the transverse holes like later guns. This example is early enough it does not have the model name on the barrel. The serial number, caliber and mfg. markings have been highlighted with white. This was a common technique to accent markings in the 1970's.
We recommend our #BALL-350 Hornady pure lead .350" round ball, #OX-15-30-W Ox Yoke .015" lubricated shooting patch, and 35-50 grains of FFFg black powder for best accuracy. Use a CCI No. 11 percussion cap on the nipple. If hunting bigger game, or in thick brush, try our .36 caliber Maxi-Balls. Increase the powder charge as needed, to achieve best accuracy with this heavier bullet. Recoil will increase, but will not be noticed during the hunt.
The forearm has a small amount of figure. The brass furniture has darkened to a mellow patina from long storage. The buttplate has a modest curve to engage the shooter's shoulder. The barrel is fitted with a hooked breech and tang. The tang has been drilled to accept the factory peep sight. The hooked breech allows the barrel to be easily dismounted for cleaning without risk of wetting the stock with water containing black powder residue. To dismount the barrel, put the lock on half cock, withdraw the ramrod, drift the key past the underlug, and the barrel can be lifted from the barrel channel for ease of cleaning. Remove the nipple and place the breech end of the barrel in a bucket of soapy water. Run a wet patch down and up the bore, the pumping action will flush all the fouling from the barrel. Once the bore is clean, run a dry patch down the bore to pick up any moisture followed by a oily patch. Dry and oil the exterior then reassemble the rifle.
The brass toeplate is mounted with brass screws. The brass triggerguard has a well aged patina. The forend of the stock is fitted with a brass forend cap. This rifle is fitted with a T/C brand fiberglas ramrod with a brass tip and 10-32 threaded tip for cleaning accessories. These factory fiberglass ramrods were a very expensive option in the 1970's and few customers purchased them. A squared cheek piece is factory carved on this T/C Seneca .45 caliber rifle.
The color case hardened lock has the factory engraved percussion hammer with flat lock plate. This lock works smoothly, with a strong mainspring, and fly detent to allow the use of double set triggers. The percussion breech with snail is fitted to the barrel. A stainless steel nipple is fitted to the breech. Triggers are double lever double set triggers, factory designed to allow firing the rifle from either trigger, cocking the lock or setting the trigger in any sequence.
This rifle includes:
- A wood bench rod with jag and palm saver ball end
- T/C Seneca 7196 peep sight with one aperture
- hex wrench
- two plastic risers
- two 6-48 filler screws for the barrel rear sight when dismounted
- Three mounting screws and a wood screw
