The Ed Rayl 12" swamped octagon .50 caliber barrel is cut rifled with eight equal size lands and grooves with a slow twist for shooting patched round balls. The swamped barrel is thickest at the breech for strength, tapers to a narrow waist, and flares slightly at the muzzle. The large caliber and swamped profile make this pistol point easily, without being overly muzzle heavy. The bore is bright and has been well maintained. A nickel silver blade front sight set in a brass base is dovetailed 1-1/4" behind the muzzle. A flat top rear sight is dovetailed 1/2" ahead of the breech for maximum sight radius. The barrel is finished to a smooth chocolate brown. The top flat is signed Wolf and the left oblique flat is signed D. Brawner No. 61 near the breech. We note the barrel channel has been fully glass bedded for moisture control and strength.
The walnut stock has nice swirls of figure throughout and does not show any handling marks associated with use. The top view shows the graceful raised carving that surrounds the flared thumbnail tang. The bottom view shows the triggerguard is mounted with a screw and a pin. The bow is lightly engraved with a floral pattern and the acorn final features cross hatch engraving. The 5/16" wooden ramrod passes through a round brass ramrod pipe and matching entry pipe. The skirt of the entry pipe is lightly engraved with the same floral pattern found on the triggerguard. The ramrod is fitted with an iron tip threaded to accept 8-32 cleaning and loading accessories. We recommend our #PL-6-50 to better service this pistol. A line of incised carving runs from the tip of the entry pipe skirt up and along the ramrod channel. A black horn muzzle cap is fitted to protect the end grain of the stock. The brass side plate is lightly engraved with the same floral pattern found on the rest of pistol. The top lock bolt passes through to engage the lock on the opposite side. We note the front bolt is only for looks and does not engage the lock.
Browned to match the barrel, the small Queen Anne flintlock has a crisp action and a well hardened frizzen. The rounded plate, pan, and the elegant cock are of London's best style, popular from 1730 to 1770. When using our best 3/4" knapped English gun flints, #FLINT-ENG-6, the lock will throw a shower of sparks into the pan. The plate and cock are lightly engraved with a floral pattern. A stainless steel White Lightnin' vent liner is well centered and positioned at the top edge of the pan to provide best ignition. The single trigger provides a smooth release of the lock.
