The .50 caliber octagon-to-round barrel is 10" long. The barrel is octagon the first 3-1/2" with a single wedding band transition before tapering round to the muzzle. A flat top rear sight has been dovetailed into the barrel 2-3/4" ahead of the breech, and a brass blade front sight is soldered 3/4" behind the muzzle. The top flat of the octagon portion of the barrel is signed M. Avance between the breech and the rear sight. The barrel is finished to a brown finish, with bright spots from normal loading and cleaning near the muzzle.
The maple stock is finished to a warm golden honey tone, which contrasts well with the browned barrel and polished brass furniture. The wrist curves down into the wide flared grip creating a comfortable curve for the shooter's hand to engage. The polished brass triggerguard, rod pipes, and sideplate have a few scattered speckles of patina. The triggerguard is mounted with a combination of pin and screw. The ramrod passes through a single ramrod pipe and matching entry pipe with pointed skirt. The pistol is fitted with a 3/8" diameter ramrod with a brass tip with 8-32 threads for loading and cleaning accessories. The brass sideplate is fitted flush with the side panel. The lock is secured with a single lock bolt.
Ignition is provided by a small Siler flint lock that is browned to match the barrel. The octagon pan, chamfered edges, and molding on the tail display the Germanic heritage of this lock. We recommend our 5/8" knapped English flints, #FLINT-ENG-5, for best performance. The single trigger is pinned high to provide good leverage against the sear of the lock. Fast ignition is assured by the slotted vent liner, positioned well above the bottom of the pan, centered on the heat of the flash. If your flint longrifle suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay, study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash.
