The .50 caliber swamped octagon Colerain barrel is 42" long, and is cut rifled with a slow twist for a tightly patched round ball. Colerain rifle barrels are the favorite choice of today's best muzzle loading gun makers, because knowledgeable shooters demand Colerain's accuracy, inside and outside. Founded by two entrepreneurs, Scott Keller and Scott Kelly were tutored by Bob Paris, the famous rifle barrel maker who was first to perfect the technique for production of correct swamped barrels. Colerain rifle barrels are drilled from solid steel, cut rifled with six “round bottom" grooves. Called “radius groove rifling", Colerain eliminates the sharp inside corner that accumulates fouling. The swamped barrel is thickest at the breech, tapers to a narrow waist, and flares at the muzzle. The barrel is finished to a streaky patina gray finish. A brass blade front sight is dovetailed 2" behind the muzzle and the flat top rear sight is dovetailed 10" forward of the breech. The near sight only has a small indicator notch in the center, the new owner will have to file the notch deeper to their preferred sight picture. The top flat is signed M. Avance just ahead of the breech.
The maple stock is stained to a dark brown and finished to a satin sheen. The brass furniture is hand polished bright. The buttstock is fitted with a wide flat buttplate to spread the felt recoil over a large area. The buttplate is finished with three flats and a wedding band. The flared tang of the barrel is retained by a single tang bolt. The buttstock is fitted with a large brass early period patchbox without side panels. The door has a cam over center spring and easily opens to reveal a cavity for storing extra flints or shooting accessories.
The bottom view shows the brass toeplate that is fitted to help protect this delicate area of the stock. A brass Virginia style triggerguard, with long grip rail is correctly pinned to the stock. The triggerguard has a wide open bow for the double lever double set triggers. An entry pipe with long skirt, and two forward pipes mount the 3/8" ramrod. The ramrod is fitted with a brass tip with 8-32 threads to accept loading and shooting accessories. This rifle comes with an extra identical spare ramrod. The forend is fitted with a brass muzzle cap to protect the end grain of the stock. A simple cheek is shaped for a right handed shooter. A large brass sideplate fills the side panel and two lock bolts pass through to engage the lock on the opposite side.
Sure-fire ignition is provided by this deluxe large Siler flint lock. Finished to a pewter gray, the lock plate has a hand forged appearance. We recommend our 3/4" knapped English flints for use with this lock. Fast ignition is assured by the slotted vent liner, positioned well above the bottom of the pan, centered on the heat of the flash. If your flint longrifle suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay, study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash.
The double lever double set triggers are properly tuned to fire from the set, or unset position. You can set the triggers with the cock in any position. Adjust the screw between the two triggers, inboard to reduce set trigger release pressure, our outboard to require a stronger pressure. When screwed fully inboard, the adjustment screw disables the rear trigger, so the rifle must be fired from the front trigger, which requires about a four pound pull for release. It is wise to disable the rear trigger, when hunting in very cold weather. The set trigger can provide very light release, perhaps an ounce or two, for accurate aimed shooting during pleasant weather.
