The barrel is a slender 7/8" octagon across the flats. The octagon corners of the barrel are crisp and square. Finished a lovely chocolate brown, the tone of the brown finish is a nice compliment to the walnut stock with it's subtle red undertone. The .50 caliber bore is bright and clean, cut rifled with six radius grooves with a 1 in 56" twist for a tightly patched round ball. We recommend our, #BALL-490, .490" round balls, #OX-18-50-D, .018" Ox-Yoke ticking patches for accurate shooting. The fixed rear sight is a classic Tennessee style with a flat top. Drift it right or left in its dovetail, to correct windage. The front sight is a traditional browned steel blade.
The walnut stock is finished to a brown with a reddish undertone. The rifle is very neatly shaped with trim lock panels and a slender forearm and forend. Not a "poor boy" this is a full dress Southern rifle with a crescent buttplate with a modest curve, ramrod entry pipe, and muzzle cap. All of the iron furniture is finished to a smooth brown. A small lozenge style patchbox that has been used on the rifle. The patchbox is easily opened by pressing the catch located at the top, this allows the cover to spring open revealing a nicely sized cavity below, perfect for storing a few extra shooting accessories. The slender comb of the buttstock tapers into the wrist. The barrel is breeched with a tang that tapers to a point. Two small steel screws retain the toeplate, protecting the fragile toe, which is otherwise often susceptible to dents and chips. The triggerguard is in the style of North Carolina with wide bow, narrow grip rail with curled spoon. The triggerguard is signed on the bow M. Compton. The 3/8" diameter ramrod is fitted with a patina finished brass tip threaded 8-32 for loading and cleaning accessories. A single lock bolt is fitted with a lozenge style sideplate. The buttstock is shaped with a square cheek piece.
The rifle is fitted with a late classic Ketland lock by Jim Chambers. This attractive medium size rifle lock is based on large Siler internal lock parts. The plate is shaped in the style of popular imported English flintlock from the 1790 to 1820 era. The tail of the lock plate is slightly lower than the raised panel that forms the lock plate, separated by an attractive molding. The raised panel is surrounded by a chamfered edge. This lock has been very neatly polished and hand engraved in a period style with WARRENTED below the pan. As this rifle ages and the engraving is shaded it will have a very attractive appearance. We recommend our 3/4" knapped English flints for best performance in this flintlock. The L&R Lock Company assembled double lever double set trigger is correctly adjusted, to allow the lock to be cocked, or the trigger set, in any sequence. You may fire the lock with the triggers set, or unset, for target, or hunting. Adjust the screw between the two triggers, inboard to reduce set trigger release pressure, our outboard to require a stronger pressure. The set trigger can provide very light release, perhaps an ounce or two, for accurate aimed shooting during pleasant weather.
