Forming the heart of the rifle is its .50 caliber 42” long swamped octagon barrel that has been finished to a textured brown patina. The swamped barrel is thickest at the breech for strength, tapers to a narrow waist to reduce weight, and flares at the muzzle. The barrel exterior was lightly etched to simulate light rust pitting, which gives this rifle a believable patina finish. The breech end has been filed to give the impression of a hooked breech. The bore is bright and has been well maintained. The .50 caliber bore is cut rifled with seven lands and grooves with a slow twist for shooting patched round balls. The muzzle has been coned to ease loading without the use of a short starter. The builder’s signature, R. J. Harn, can be found on the top flat between the breech and the rear sight. The flat top rear sight is located 9-1/4” forward of the breech, and the antique sight with feather finial has been neatly replicated. The tall, rounded nickel silver front sight set in a brass base is dovetailed behind the muzzle.
Stocked in a lovely piece of walnut finished with a reddish undertone, the wood has been hand rubbed with oil to achieve a beautiful finish. This rifle has been handled and fired and the stock has a few minor handling marks. The buttstock is shaped as a fowler with an English influence. Expertly executed raised and incised carving can be found on the sliding wood patchbox. By pushing the button on the end, the door can slide to the rear, revealing the well-made cavity below. Perfect for storing your extra shooting and cleaning accessories, a nice patchbox is a great addition to any long rifle.
The top view of the rifle shows off the tapered comb of the buttstock. The buttplate is shaped with a stepped English-style comb and has been neatly hand engraved. This rifle has been used, and the brass has some dark streaks from water with black powder residue wetting the brass. Forward of the comb, the wrist is decorated with a silver thumbpiece engraved with W.H.S. The expertly executed shell design frames the flared thumbnail tang of the breech plug as it tapers forward to meet the barrel. A single bolt passes through the stock to engage the trigger plate below. Three small steel pins retain the 42" swamped barrel to the forearm. The rounded toe fades into the lock panel. The brass triggerguard has been pinned into position. The triggerguard bow has neatly filed raised edges and a hand-engraved boar's head with a bow and quiver of arrows. The elaborate front finial has been neatly recreated. The forearm and forend are very gracefully shaped and follow the taper and flare of the swamped barrel. The wooden ramrod is held in position by two brass ramrod pipes and a matching entry pipe. Each pipe is finished with octagon flats and has the same patina finish as the rest of the brass found on this rifle. Around the skirt of the entry pipe, the stock is decoratively finished with a flourish of raised carving. This carving transitions into a single line of incised molding that runs the length of the ramrod channel. The tapered wooden ramrod is fitted with a brass tip threaded to accept 8-32 cleaning and loading accessories. A cupped horn tip is fitted on the opposite end for loading round balls, and the tip lines up perfectly with the brass muzzle cap that protects the end grain of the stock. This ramrod has been used, and the crisp thin edge of the horn tip does have some chipping. The side panel is fitted with a large brass sideplate. Held in position by a pair of dome-headed lock bolts, the plate has also been engraved with a boar's head, axe, and arrows. To the rear, the classic squared cheek of the rifle can be seen highlighted by carving on either side. Very well executed; the carving is sharp and crisp due to the well-cleaned background.
This rifle is fitted with a large round-faced flintlock. The lock plate has been filed and polished, and the springs have been shaped and tempered and tuned by Mr. Harn. The lock is finished to a patina gray finish with engraved scroll designs. This lock will spark well when used with Track's best 7/8 English flints. The raised lock panels are nicely shaped with a beaver tail finial. This rifle is fitted with a hand-forged single trigger with a decorative scroll back. The trigger is pinned high to give good leverage and a smooth, crisp release. Fast ignition is assured by the stainless vent liner, positioned well above the bottom of the pan, centered on the heat of the flash. If your flint long rifle suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay, study the work of today's best gunmakers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash.
