This full length U. S. Model 1884 Springfield Trapdoor Rifle has a bright shootable bore with only a few areas of minor light pitting. The rear sight windage adjustment is loose. The cartouche mark is barely visible on the side panel. The Model 1884 was in production until late 1890 when manufacture turned to the 1888 rod bayonet model, production of which continued into 1893. Trigger reach is 13-1/4" and the weight is 9.3 pounds.
Chambered for the .45-70 Government cartridge. The barrel has aged to a textured dark brown patina. The shootable bore is bright with only a few areas of minor light pitting. The barrel is marked with the V, over P, proof marks. Just below these marks is an upraised eagle head over P. The top of the tapered round barrel is marked with a stamped letter I, an individual inspector's mark. The Buffington rear sight has screw adjustments for windage and elevation, and the sight is calibrated up to 2,000 yards. The markings on the sight are clearly visible. However, the windage adjustment is loose and can be wiggled side-to-side. A blade front sight is mounted behind the muzzle.
The stock has many dings are marks from over a century of handling and use. There are no cracks or chips in the stock. The cartouche mark on the side panel is barely visible. All of the iron furniture has aged to a dark textured brown patina. The comb extension of the buttplate is stamped with U.S.. The serial number, 501XXX, is clearly marked on the breech of the rifle. The door itself bears the markings U.S. over MODEL over 1884.
The trigger guard has a dark textured brown patina and the rear sling swivel is attached to the front of the bow. The forward sling swivel is attached to the front barrel band, along with the stacking ring. No sling is included with this rifle. The two barrel bands and their springs are in the correct position. Both are marked with the letter U, the open end of which faces forward on the right side of the rifle. The original cleaning rod is in its correct location, retained by the unique locking mechanism that requires one to pull down on the end of the rod to relieve tension on the notched portion of the rod.
The lock works crisply, and the trigger release is positive at only 2 to 3 pounds pressure. The grooved face target style trigger feels very nice, with a smooth release. The trapdoor action is solid, and the firing pin moves smoothly within the breech block, as it should. The lock plate is marked with a forward facing eagle next to U.S. over SPRINGFIELD. The lock works crisply, and the trigger release is positive and smooth.
This U. S. 1884 Springfield rifle has a bright shootable bore. It will make an excellent addition to any trapdoor, Springfield rifle, or Spanish American War collection.
