This Traditions Hawken Woodsman is stocked in beech and trimmed in brass furniture. The rifle is used with many handling marks, and light pitting in the bore. The brass has aged to a mellow patina. The rifle weighs in at 7.1 pounds and has a trigger reach of 14-1/8". With a 28" straight octagon barrel and a balance point just behind the rear sight, this rifle would be a good starter gun for anyone interested in taking the dive into muzzle loading hunting.
The .54 caliber 28" long barrel is rifled with eight equal lands and grooves, and one turn in 48" twist, for patched round ball. The bore is bright, but we note minor pitting running its entire length. Order our #BALL-530 pure lead .530" balls, and #OX-15-50-W lubed .015" patches. The front sight is a blued steel bead. The rear sight is mounted 8-1/4" ahead of the breech and is click adjustable for both windage and elevation. The right and left oblique flats are stamped with the factory information near the breech. The barrel bluing has a few light scratches and speckling in the finish.

The simple hooked breech, which allows for easy cleaning. Simply press out the wedge key, using thumb pressure, and remove the ramrod. Then lift the muzzle end, to unhook the breech plug from its tang. Remove the nipple, and insert the breech end into a bucket of hot soapy water, for easy cleaning. Rinse, dry, and oil.
The percussion lock is factory color case hardened, with a strong mainspring for fast lock time. This lock has a fly detent in the tumbler, for smooth action with the double lever double set triggers. The double lever double set triggers are correctly adjusted to allow the triggers to be set, or the lock to be cocked, in any sequence. A stainless steel nipple for No. 11 percussion caps is fitted in the drum, which is well supported by the lock plate.
