The fowler is fitted with a Rice Barrel Company 20 gauge, 44" octagon-to-round barrel. The breech is tapered octagon for 12" with a transition to round with no wedding band. The barrel is polished and finished to a brown. The brown finish has a few speckles from use. A brass front sight is fitted behind the muzzle, no rear sight is fitted. This smooth bore gun is legal for use in the popular NMLRA North West Trade Gun matches, shooting bird shot at ten clay birds on the trap range, and shooting round balls at paper targets on the 50 yard range. With practice, this gun will serve a primitive deer hunter at ranges up to 100 yards. The barrel is signed 20 * Alford * 22 on the top of the breech end.
Stocked in a dense piece of sugar maple the stock is stained to a dark brown with golden undertones. The stock has a hand scraped finish that is visible as the fowler is rolled in the light. This hand made fowler blends American and British features to create a unique piece. The buttstock is fitted with a large, tall steel buttplate to help spread the recoil from the 20 gauge bore. The French style triggerguard has a wide bow with a curled trigger. The lock panels gently taper widest to the rear in early flintlock fashion. From below the rounded toe of the fowler can be seen. The long French trade gun style triggerguard has rounded ends. The ramrod is held in position by three brass ramrod pipes, one entry and two forward. The brass ramrod pipes are shaped from sheet brass, with small rings on the ends. The hand split hickory rod has a flared nearly 1/2" in diameter, while the rear end is fitted with a brass tip with 10-32 threads. We would highly recommend using a dedicated cleaning and loading rod and keep this very well fitted rod with this fowler for use in the field. The sideplate has an English influence with a sea serpent design, popular on North West Trade Guns. Two large lock bolts secure the round faced fowler lock to the stock, while a third screw retains the tail of the sideplate. The buttstock is shaped with no cheek piece in fowling gun fashion. The lock panels are very neatly shaped with the upper edge a continuation of the side and quarter barrel flat, which creates a very trim appearance.
Ignition for the fowler is provided by a Jim Chambers' English Fowler lock. This flint lock is modeled after a fine antique lock found on a fowler from the Williamsburg collection. Expertly constructed the lock has strong internals. The frizzen spring is neatly shaped with a decorative finial. The pan has a bridle arm to support the frizzen pivot screw, not always found on early English locks. The plate has an integral pan, and the frizzen is tightly fitted. We recommend our 7/8" knapped gun flints, for best performance in this fowler. The trigger is pinned high to provide good leverage against the sear. Behind the lock a white lightnin' stainless touch hole liner has been properly installed in the "sunset" position to give the priming charge direct access to the main charge, insuring quick and reliable ignitions. The breech has a few speckles of patina around the vent liner.
