Constructed in the most utilitarian fashion, this style of heavy barreled Tennessee rifle is often called a "Chunk Gun or "over the log" rifle. The curly maple stock has been finished to a dark brown with golden undertones using an aquafortis solution. The 1" straight octagon gives the rifle a modest weight that is best fired from a rest or "over the log". The iron furniture, small Siler lock and R.E. Davis triggers are finished to a dark aged patina. Trigger reach is 14" and this rifle weighs 9.6 pounds.
The Green Mountain .50 caliber 42" barrel is 1" octagon. Rifled with eight equal lands and grooves with a 1 in 70" twist for a patched round ball. Green Mountain Muzzle Loading Rifle Barrels are machined from high quality American made bar stock, A.I.S.I. 1137 modified, stress relieved, annealed, certified rifle barrel quality steel. All barrels are drilled from solid stock, reamed to a high degree of smoothness, then optically checked for straightness. Very close tolerances are maintained. We recommend our .490" pure lead round ball, patched with .015" Ox-Yoke patching, lubricated with our Mink Oil tallow patch grease, if you require best accuracy. The barrel is dovetailed with a steel blade front sight and a full buck horn rear sight mounted 10-1/4" ahead of the breech.
The curly maple stock has a dark stain with just a hint of golden undertone to display the figure on the stock. The buttplate is a typical crescent style found on Appalachian rifles. The triggerguard is in the style of Bean of Tennessee. The toe is fitted with a iron toeplate to provide some protection to the otherwise fragile toe area when it's in contact with the ground during loading or cleaning. Metal to wood fit is only fair with some visible inletting gaps. The right hand side of the wrist the wood is well below the surface of the long tang, while on the left it is nearly flush. The shaping on the lock panels and forearm is a bit chunky. Three ramrod pipes are fitted and the ramrod is fitted with brass tips with 10-32 threads on the rear end. A screw is installed as a thread protector. The ramrod has been left longer than the barrel. The side panel has a lozenge shaped sideplate fitted flush with the panel.
Ignition is provided by a small Siler percussion lock. Shaped in the manner of a conversion from flintlock. The lock plate is finished brown, to match the barrel. The brown finish shows some wear on the breech end of the barrel and the slot on the powder drum screw. The lock has a strong mainspring, and short hammer travel, for fast lock time. The drum and nipple are well supported by the lock plate. Below the lock a set of R.E. Davis double lever, double set triggers has been installed. The triggers are properly tuned to fire from the set, or unset position. Adjust the screw between the two triggers, inboard to reduce set trigger release pressure, our outboard to require a stronger pressure.
A very utilitarian Tennessee style over the log or chunk gun in .50 caliber with a small Siler percussion lock and double set triggers. Order it for a ten day visual inspection. You will be delighted. Else if it does not fit you, return it in unfired condition for same-day refund. Postage is your only risk, when you order any one-of-a-kind gun from Track, whether new, used, or antique.
