We recommend .375" diameter balls with this revolver. If your percussion revolver has a sharp cylinder mouth, it may cut lead, reducing accuracy. Chamfer the mouth of each chamber, slightly, until the ball seats snugly, without cutting lead. You may prefer to slightly increase the amount of chamfer at each chamber on this revolver, if shaves lead from a round ball or bullet, during loading.
The 6-1/2" octagon barrel is fitted with a post blade front sight. The notch in the center of the frame serves as the rear sight. The top flat is marked Lyman Middlefield Conn.. The side flat of the barrel is marked with the Uberti touch mark and .36 Cal the right side is markedMADE IN ITALY.The blue is in good shape with some minor wear on the loading lever plunger from use. The brass triggerguard has aged to a dark patina. The Remington trigger is wide and comfortable. The rigid steel frame of the 1858 Remington made it highly prized by its users.
The blued cylinder has the Remington safety notches cut between each nipple recess. Pull the hammer to half-cock, turn the cylinder to align the safety notch with the hammer nose, and set the hammer into the notch. You can safely carry this revolver with all six chambers loaded, if you rest the hammer in a safety notch. This revolver uses 6-.75mm threaded nipples. It is fitted with a new set of our PIR-EI nipples.
Despite your best efforts, this revolver will need to be cleaned after 12 or 18 shots. Remove the wedge, barrel, and cylinder. Wipe the face of the cylinder, and wipe the cylinder pin. If you continue to load and fire a badly fouled revolver, the effort needed to cock and fire the gun will become greater, causing the small internal hand, spring, and cylinder latch to become worn and slightly damaged. Continued use will cause the cylinder and latch to become out-of-time. Simple cleaning and maintenance will prevent problems!
