Colt 1851 Navy Revolver,
.36 caliber, 7-1/2" barrel,
percussion, walnut, with brown box,
used, by COLT - Second Generation
The .36 caliber 7-1/2" octagonal barrel is fitted with a bead front sight. A notch in the hammer serves as a rear sight. The bore is bright and has been well maintained. The pistol is marked ~ ADDRESS SAML COLT NEW-YORK CITY ~ on the top flat of the barrel. Our bottom view shows the color case hardened loading lever, wedge key, and the polished nickel plated triggerguard and grip strap. Walnut grips are factory varnished to a satin finish, mounted in Colt style, finished in the classic Colt reddish brown color, made of one piece of walnut. This Colt Model 1851 has the square back triggerguard, not often seen on replicas today. The color case hardened frame is marked COLTS PATENT just below the cylinder. The cylinder is engraved with a naval scene.
We can supply a correct #FLASK-COLT Colt style flask, #BALL-375 round lead balls, a mold, #CAPPER-REV-B brass cap dispenser, and everything you need to load, shoot, and clean this percussion revolver. If you decide to fire this revolver, the factory recommends .375" round balls, and each chamber will hold 30 grains of FFFg powder. We recommend 21 grains of FFFg powder, and a .375" round ball, for best accuracy and best compression. Cover each ball with a small amount of bullet lubricant grease.
Despite your best efforts, this revolver will need to be cleaned after 12 or 18 shots. Remove the wedge, barrel, and cylinder. Wipe the face of the cylinder, and wipe the cylinder pin. If you continue to load and fire a badly fouled revolver, the effort needed to cock and fire the gun will become greater, causing the small internal hand, spring, and cylinder latch to become worn and slightly damaged. Continued abuse will cause the cylinder and latch to become out-of-time. Simple cleaning and maintenance will prevent problems.
This Colt brand revolver is a good value and comes with the factory brown box. We don't see many Colt Second Generation revolvers offered in trade.
