This early production C.V.A. Mountain rife was assembled from a kit and is stocked in maple, trimmed in browned iron furniture, and decorated with nickel silver oval inlays and capbox. A pewter forend cap is fitted to the forearm. The factory percussion lock has been replaced with a L&R replacement lock that has been blued. Trigger reach is 14" to fit todays average size shooter. Weight is 8.1 pounds.
The .50 caliber bore is bright. The bore is rifled with a slow twist for a patched round ball. The 32" barrel is stamped Connecticut Valley Arms over Black Powder Only. Just to the right of these markings it is stamped MADE IN U.S.A. The rear sight is adjustable for elevation with a small screw. The front sight is a nickel silver blade with a brass base. The brown finish on the barrel has the edges worn bright and some thin spots in the finish.
This rifle is stocked in maple finished to a medium brown. The raised beaver tail cheekpiece is shaped for a right hand shooter. The cheek is angled to recoil away from your face, another ingenious feature found on better rifles. The nickel silver capbox has a cam over center lid and opens and closes securely. The short tang anchors the hooked breech. Two steel keys retain the .50 caliber barrel. Remove the ramrod, withdraw the keys, and the barrel will lift out for easy cleaning. Clean it with hot soapy water, dry, oil, and re-assemble. The wooden ramrod has a tip with 10-32 threads to accept loading and cleaning accessories.
The percussion lock is an L&R replacement lock. The bead blasted finish has been blued which gives it a very matte tone. Fit in the lock mortise is only fair. This lock has thicker stronger internal springs and parts than the Connecticut Valley Arms lock. The percussion lock is secured with two lock bolts with small inlet washer style sideplates.
The double lever double set triggers are adjustable for both trigger release and backlash. The triggers are currently adjusted to fire from the set, or unset position. You can set the triggers before, or after cocking the lock. Once the rear trigger is set the front trigger is very light.
Order it for a ten day visual inspection. You will be delighted. Else if it does not fit you, return it in unfired condition for same-day refund. Postage is your only risk, when you order any one-of-a-kind gun from Track, whether new, used, or antique.
