An 1840-1860 vintage Ohio halfstock rifle, in the style of John and Caleb Vincent, signed by talented gunsmith Mike Compton. This rifle is new, unfired, with a .40 caliber Colerain barrel that is ready to shoot. Stocked in curly maple, finished to a medium brown, it nicely contrasts the polished bright engraved brass furniture. The 34" length, 13/16" straight octagon .40 caliber Colerain barrel makes it perfect for offhand target shooting. Colerain rifle barrels are the favorite choice of today's best muzzle loading gun makers, because knowledgeable shooters demand Colerain's accuracy, inside and outside. Founded by two entrepreneurs, Scott Keller and Scott Kelly were tutored by Bob Paris, the famous rifle barrel maker who was first to perfect the technique for production of correct swamped barrels. Colerain rifle barrels are drilled from solid steel, cut rifled with six “round bottom" grooves. Called “radius groove rifling", Colerain eliminates the sharp inside corner that accumulates fouling. Radius groove rifling cutters are a bit more expensive to make, but Colerain's customers agree that the accuracy, easy loading, and easy cleaning are worth the cost. The bore is bright, clean, and ready to shoot. The barrel is finished to a deep chocolate brown. A silver blade in a brass base is dovetailed 1-1/2" behind the muzzle. A flat-top rear sight is dovetailed 9-1/2" ahead of the breech.

The figured maple stock has been stained a medium brown with golden undertone to best reveal the stripe and figure. Combined with the engraved polished brass furniture to make this rifle very appealing to the eye. A poured and border engraved pewter cap protects the forend, exactly as on original Vincent rifles. The square cheek is inlaid with an engraved silver hunter's star. The deep crescent brass buttplate is engraved along the comb. The deep curved buttplate is comfortable to hold and engages your shoulder with surprising comfort. These are correct features, all commonly found on collectible original antique Vincent rifles. The brass capbox is neatly engraved and opens to reveal a round cavity for storing extra shooting accessories. The underside of the lid is engraved #140 / M. Compton / 12/2025 in three lines.

Viewed from the top, this slim rifle features a long narrow comb that makes the architecture flow smoothly. A single lock bolt passes through the straight pointed tang to engage the trigger plate below. The barrel is retained to the forearm with a single pin surrounded by engraved nickel silver scroll escutcheons. The top of the wrist is fitted with an engraved nickel silver oval inlay. The bottom view shows the long engraved brass toeplate which protects the critical toe area during loading. The brass triggerguard is also lightly engraved. The triggerguard bow has a finger spur, along with the rear of the grip rail. All of the brass is polished bright.

The brass entry pipe retains the 5/16" diameter ramrod fitted with a brass tip threaded to accept 8-32 cleaning and loading accessories. The entry pipe has octagon flats, and the engraved skirt tapers to a point. Two matching ramrod pipes are soldered to the barrel's under rib. Mr. Compton has captured the slim grace and feel of the original Vincent rifles. These were not thick or clumsy, but were simple and elegant.

The classic Goulcher lock has been blued and rubbed back. This R. E. Davis lock is engraved Goulcher in a banner, and the hammer is lightly floral engraved. The drum and stainless steel Hot Shot nipple are well supported by the lock plate, critical on this style of ignition. The 1/4-28 nipple for No. 11 percussion caps is surrounded by a brass flash cup to protect the wood along the upper lock panel from cap flash. The lock is retained by a single bolt that passes through a classic Vincent engraved brass sideplate.

The Davis double lever double set triggers are properly adjusted to fire from the set, or unset position. You may set the triggers before, or after cocking the lock. Adjust the screw between the two triggers, inboard to reduce set trigger release pressure, our outboard to require a stronger pressure. The set trigger can provide very light release, perhaps an ounce or two, for accurate aimed shooting during pleasant weather.

Although light weight, recoil is never a problem in a .40 caliber rifle. This slim halfstock Vincent rifle will be a joy to shoot at the range or on your next small game hunt in the deep woods!
