This Thompson Center Hawken Cougar Rifle is in excellent condition with a bright well maintained bore. The rifle is stocked in figured American walnut and the barrel has been blued, while the stainless steel furniture and lock plate are finished to a matte tone. With an overall weight of 8.0 pounds and a trigger reach of 14", this rifle is perfectly suited for today's average to larger size shooters.
The factory blued barrel is .50 caliber, 15/16" octagon, 28" length. The front sight is Thompson Center's blued steel bead sight. The rear sight is click adjustable for elevation, and screw adjustable for windage. The bore is bright and clean, with crisp rifling grooves. We recommend our .490" round ball, .015" lubed patch, over a charge of 70 grains of FFg black powder. This rifle pre-dates the QLA muzzle and the bore is rifled all the way to the end of the muzzle. The barrel blue appears to be in very good condition.
Stocked in a nice piece of figured American black walnut. The buttstock is inlaid with a large Hawken - Cougar inlay. This rifle has only a few minor handling marks. The top view shows the hooked breech, which allows the barrel to be easily dismounted. Before dismounting the barrel, withdraw the ramrod. Remove the single wedge key located forward and below the barrel, put the lock into the half-cock position and lift the barrel out for cleaning. From below, the stainless steel triggerguard can be seen. Two screws hold the guard in position. Note, that no toeplate has been installed on the rifle, leaving that portion of the stock unprotected. A washer style escutcheon plate surrounds the single bolt. Further back on the rifle the standard beaver tail cheek can be seen, standard issue on T/C rifles.
Ignition for the rifle is provided by this large T/C percussion lock. The lock has the factory engraving found on most Thompson Center locks. The breech is fitted with a Hot Shot 1/4-28 stainless steel nipple for a No. 11 caps. Double lever double set triggers are well adjusted, to fire set or unset. When the rear trigger is set (latched), the front trigger has a hair-trigger release, perhaps 2 or 3 ounces. The adjustment screw between the triggers allows even finer or coarser adjustment, as desired. Or, turn the screw fully inboard, to disable the set trigger feature, when hunting in very cold weather.
