This percussion half stock rifle is slim and trim, with a maple stock and well fitted brass furniture. The slender rifle is very typical of many percussion Ohio rifles made during the 1830 to 1850 period. This rifle is fitted with a Sharon barrel and Schillinger percussion lock. The .40 caliber bore is bright and has been well maintained. Weighing 6.8 pounds, and with a trigger reach of 13-1/4", this rifle is properly setup for today's average man size shooter.

The 28" Sharon barrel is 7/8" straight octagon and is finished to a smooth brown. The browning shows wear in the typically handled areas. The .40 caliber bore is cut rifled by the Sharon Barrel Company, this nice American made barrel has eight equal lands and grooves, with slow rifling twist, for patched round ball. The top flat of the barrel is signed Beaver Lodge behind the rear sight. Located 10" forward of the breech a semi-buckhorn rear sight is dovetailed into the barrel. The front sight is a silver blade with copper dovetail base dovetailed 1-3/4" behind the muzzle. The bore is bright, well maintained, and ready to shoot.

The buttstock has the late Ohio style straight line comb architecture. The buttplate and all furniture appear to be neatly inlet and well finished. The brass furniture has aged to a mellow patina. The maple stock was finished with chromium trioxide, a popular stain during the 1970's. Over time the stain ages to a greenish tint. This rifle does have a very distinctive greenish tint when viewed under florescent lights. The stock also has many small handling marks from decades of use and we note a small chip behind the trigger plate. Viewed from above the pointed tang has a single bolt that passes through the stock to engage the trigger plate below. A single wedge key retains the barrel to the forearm and is surrounded by brass oval inlays. We would recommend using our #FLUSH-RST flush nipple rather than dismounting the tang bolt to remove the barrel for cleaning.

Our bottom view of the rifle shows the brass triggerguard and toeplate. The brass toeplate is retained by two screws and protects that delicate area of the stock when it is in contact with the ground. The triggerguard is pinned into position. Well forward the ramrod is retained by two forward brass pipes that are soldered to the barrel under rib, and a long brass entry pipe. A poured pewter forend cap protects the end grain of the stock. The 5/16" hickory ramrod is fitted with a brass tip threaded to accept 8-32 loading and cleaning accessories. A square cheek piece adds comfort for a right hand shooter, while aiming this modest .40 caliber rifle. A single lock bolt passes through a brass tear drop shaped sideplate that is inlet flush with the stock.

Ignition for this rifle is provided by a Schillinger percussion lock. The lock has a strong mainspring, stirrup link, and fly detent, all nice internal features. The inside surfaces of the lock were brightly polished by the lock maker. No castings were used, all internal parts were machined from solid bar-stock. The lock is browned to match the barrel and the plate is marked Schillinger below the powder drum. A stainless steel 1/4-28 Hot Shot nipple for No. 11 percussion caps is fitted in the well supported powder drum. The double lever double set triggers fire set or unset, for target match shooting, or cold weather hunting with gloved fingers. Turn the set screw, between the two triggers, inboard, until the rear trigger is disabled. After hunting, return the screw to its normal position, and adjust it to make your set trigger as strong or as feather light as you prefer, within the limits of safe use.

The balance point is just behind the rear sight, this rifle is very steady when aimed offhand. Neatly assembled, this rifle has a bright well maintained bore.
