CVA Mountain Rifle,
.54 caliber, 32" barrel,
Maslin percussion lock, beech, iron,
used, from a kit by Connecticut Valley Arms
The .54 caliber 32" barrel is rifled with a slow twist for a patched round ball. The bore is bright, clean, and ready to shoot. The barrel exterior is browned with some texturing in areas. The long step adjustable rear sight is dovetailed so it sits 6" ahead of the breech. The front sight is a nickel silver blade with copper base dovetailed 1-1/4" behind the muzzle. The left oblique flat at the breech is stamped with mfg. marks Connecticut Valley Arms Inc. / Black Powder Only .54 Cal. along with the serial number.
Stocked in beech, finished as walnut, no capbox is used on this Mountain rifle. Instead, the area where the capbox would be found is decorated with brass tacks in a cross design. The buttplate and triggerguard are browned iron. The oval escutcheon plates are nickel silver with steel screws. The pewter forend cap serves as the ramrod entry pipe. The browned ramrod pipes have turned rings at each end. The wooden ramrod is fitted with a brass loading tip, and the opposite end has a tip threaded to accept 10-32 cleaning and loading accessories. The oval cheek piece is shaped to be comfortable for a right hand shooter. The factory router groove around the cheek was not sanded flush with the buttstock when this kit was finished. The percussion lock is secured with two lock bolts with browned washer style sideplates.
The short tang anchors the hooked breech. To dismount the barrel, place the lock at half cock, withdraw the ramrod, remove the wedge keys located forward and below the barrel. Use a small brass drift, such as our #TOOL-KEY-B. Once the keys are removed, lift the barrel from the muzzle to unhook the breech from the tang. Remove the nipple and place the breech end of the barrel in a bucket of soapy water. Run a wet patch down and up the bore, the pumping action will flush all the fouling from the barrel. Once the bore is clean, run a dry patch down the bore to pick up any moisture followed by an oily patch. Dry and oil the exterior then reassemble the rifle.
The Maslin style percussion lock has a fly detent in the tumbler, to allow the use of the double set triggers. The lock features a tiny internal screw, cleverly arranged to adjust sear engagement in the full cock notch. The lock has a few scattered speckles of patina on the plate. A stainless steel nipple for No. 11 caps is fitted to the powder drum. The double lever double set triggers are adjustable for both trigger release and backlash. The triggers are currently adjusted to fire from the set, or unset position. You can set the triggers before, or after cocking the lock. Unset the front trigger requires firm pressure. Once the rear trigger is set the front trigger is very light. The factory set trigger adjustment screw head is half broken off.
