This used Thompson Center RENEGADE .54 caliber percussion rifle was factory finished has a few marks from handling, firing, and cleaning. The black walnut stock has a very few scattered handling marks. The color case hardened lock and blued barrel show some wear from light use. Trigger reach is 13-3/4" and the weight is 7.9 pounds, making the rifle set up for today's average size shooter.

The .54 caliber, 1" octagon barrel is 26" in length. The bore is bright. The barrel is fitted with a square patridge front sight and the earliest variation of Renegade rear sight with windage and elevation adjustment. We recommend our #BALL-530 Hornady pure lead .530" round ball, #OX-15-50-D Ox Yoke .015" dry patch, #MINK OIL tallow lubricant, and 70 grains of #GOEX-FFg black powder for best accuracy. If hunting big game, in thick brush, try our .54 caliber Maxi-ball. Increase the powder charge as needed, to achieve best accuracy with this heavier bullet. Recoil will increase, but will not be noticed during the hunt.

Our front view shows the straight grain American black walnut stock. The stock has a very few scattered handling marks. The blued steel buttplate is wide and nearly flat to spread the recoil from the .54 caliber bore over a large area. The buttplate does show typically heel wear from being placed on the ground during loading. This early example has the flush mounted escutcheon plates. The plates and key show some wear from using a steel tool to dismount the key. The wide trigger bow has ample room for the double lever, double set triggers. The wooden ramrod is fitted with blued steel tips threaded to accept 10-32 cleaning and loading accessories.

Our top view shows the hooked breech that allows the barrel to be dismounted for cleaning. To dismount the barrel, place the lock at half cock, withdraw the ramrod, remove the single wedge key located forward and below the barrel. Use a small brass drift, such as our #TOOL-KEY-B. Once the key is removed, lift the barrel from the muzzle to unhook the breech from the tang. Remove the nipple and place the breech end of the barrel in a bucket of soapy water. Run a wet patch down and up the bore, the pumping action will flush all the fouling from the barrel. Once the bore is clean, run a dry patch down the bore to pick up any moisture followed by a oily patch. Dry and oil the exterior then reassemble the rifle.

Our lock view shows the color case hardened percussion lock, factory engraved by Thompson Center. This lock works smoothly, with a strong mainspring, and fly detent to allow the use of double set triggers. The breech on this rifle is fitted with a 1/4-28 stainless steel nipple. The triggers are correctly adjusted, you may cock the lock, or set the trigger, in any sequence. Turn the tiny set trigger adjustment screw, between the two triggers, inboard to reduce the set trigger release tension. Or turn it fully inboard, to disable the set trigger feature, when hunting in very cold climates, where a numb finger might release the light set trigger too early. When training youngsters, we prefer to start with the set trigger disabled.
