The .54 caliber Green Mountain 1" straight octagon rifle barrel is cut rifled with eight deep lands and grooves in a caliber appropriate 1 in 70" twist, ideal for tightly patched round balls. Green Mountain Muzzle Loading Rifle Barrels are machined from high quality American made bar stock, A.I.S.I. 1137 modified, stress relieved, annealed, certified rifle barrel quality steel. All barrels are drilled from solid stock, reamed to a high degree of smoothness, then optically checked for straightness. Very close tolerances are maintained. The top flat of the .54 caliber Green Mountain barrel is signed by the maker, G. B. Nelson. The rear sight is a semi-buck horn sight dovetailed 7" ahead of the breech. The front sight is a tall nickel silver blade in a brass dovetail base that is fitted to the barrel 1-1/2" behind the muzzle. Together, these sights work well and look right on this nice Hawken rifle.
The maple stock is stained to a whiskey tone, with gold highlights and brown depths finished to a satin egg shell finish. The stock is trimmed in iron furniture with a classic Hawken crescent buttplate that securely engages your shoulder. The forend is fitted with a poured pewter muzzle cap. The top view shows the long tang hooked breech. The tang bolts are polished and fire blued and fitted with the slots aligned. Both tang screws engage the long steel trigger plate, forming a strong steel sandwich that reinforces the wrist from above and below. This was one of Jacob and Sam Hawken's secrets. If a rifle becomes broken, it will most likely be broken at the wrist, the thinnest and section of the rifle stock. The triggerplate and tang reinforce the wrist, strengthening this critical area, making the Hawken rifle reliable, durable, and famous. The beaver tail toeplate protects the pointed toe, often in contact with the ground while loading. This percussion rifle is made to accept a sturdy 7/16" ramrod. The ramrod is fitted with a iron tip threaded 8-32 for loading and cleaning accessories. The wedge keys extend just past the opposite oval escutcheons. Both keys are captured to prevent loss. To remove the barrel; place the lock at half cock, remove the ramrod, drift the captured wedge keys past the underlugs, lift the barrel up and unhook the breech plug. The stock is shaped with a typical beaver tail cheek rest and single lock bolt fitted to a recessed steel escutcheon, all classic features of an 1840 era Hawken rifle. It balances nicely in your hands, for offhand shooting.
The L&R percussion Hawken lock has been finished to a dark brown. The lock has a strong mainspring, stirrup link, and fly detent, all nice internal features. The percussion lock has a square inside corner, the lock panel gently fades up into the bolster of the lock. The L&R double lever double set triggers are tuned to fire the lock set, or unset. The lock and triggers may be cocked or set in any sequence. The trigger plate is very long, extending through the wrist, accepting two tang bolts from above. Adjust the screw between the two triggers, inboard to reduce set trigger release pressure, our outboard to require a stronger pressure. The set trigger can provide very light release, for accurate aimed shooting during pleasant weather.
