The .50 caliber barrel is rifled with a 1 in 48" twist for a tightly patched round ball. The bore is bright, clean, and ready to shoot. The full buckhorn rear sight is positioned 11" ahead of the breech, about 2" behind the balance point, in the location much preferred by older shooters with corrective lenses. The blued steel blade front sight is located 2" behind the muzzle. We note the back of the sight has been painted orange for better visibility. The 39" octagon barrel is marked with various Pedersoli markings including the caliber, .50, on the left oblique flat. The barrel is finished a dark chocolate brown with a few light scratches and wear spots from handling.
This longrifle's walnut stock is finished to a medium brown with smooth factory varnish finish. The stock has a few small handling marks from normal field use. The rifle is not decorated or fancy. No entry pipe is fitted, and no pins or lugs are needed, since the rod pipe mounting screws also attach the forend to the barrel. A molding along the ramrod channel ends with a relief at the muzzle, to allow your fingers to easily grip and remove the rod. The wooden ramrod is fitted with a brass tip threaded to accept 8-32 cleaning and loading accessories. No decorative muzzle cap or toeplate is used on Frontier rifles. The polished brass triggerguard is surface mounted with a brass screw at rear, and a retaining pin at front. The triggerguard has a medium large bow, to accept the double set triggers. The back view shows the classic Kentucky rifle style cheek piece, and side panel. No sideplate, muzzle cap, or ramrod entry pipe is fitted.
The large rifle size percussion lock is color case hardened in mottled colors. The drum is fitted with a blued steel nipple for No. 11 percussion caps. Double lever double set triggers are correctly tuned to fire set or unset. You may cock the lock, or set the triggers, in any sequence. Thus, this rifle will serve you well when hunting small game during cold weather. A tiny adjustment screw, between the two triggers, controls trigger release. Turn it inboard, until the set feature is disabled, for use during very cold weather. Don't risk an accidental discharge. Numb fingers cannot feel the very light touch of this double set trigger, when set. When disabled, the rifle has a normal trigger release, probably about 4 pounds or a bit more, ideal for hunting. When enabled, you can set a very light trigger release, ideal for match shooting, or hunting small game in moderate weather.
