The Rice 13" swamped octagon .50 caliber is cut rifled with 7 radius bottom grooves and is finished with an antique gray patina finish. We note the muzzle has been coned to allow loading without a short starter. The swamped barrel is thickest at the breech for strength, tapers to a narrow waist, and flares slightly at the muzzle. The large caliber and swamped profile make this pistol point easily, without being overly muzzle heavy. The bore is bright and has been well maintained. A nickel silver blade front sight set in a brass base is dovetailed 1" behind the muzzle. A flat top rear sight is dovetailed 3" ahead of the breech.
Rice Muzzle Loading Rifle Barrels are set between centers and milled octagonal, insuring a centered bore, concentric with the exterior, with no "run-out". Each barrel is stress relieved in an atmosphere controlled electric furnace, to eliminate work hardening or barrel warp, and to dampen harmonic vibrations or barrel whip. After the rifling has been cut, each bore is "ball burnished". A carbide bore-sizing die is pulled through the barrel, to insure bore dimension uniformity, eliminating any tight or loose spots inside the barrel. This critical procedure leaves the top of the lands smooth and polished, equaling the traditional lead lapping procedure. Rice barrels do not require lapping or extensive shooting to break-in.
Viewed from above you can see the graceful taper and flare on the swamped barrel. The stock has a few minor handling marks from use. The top view shows the graceful raised carving that surrounds the flared thumbnail tang before flowing down into the raised beavertail side panels. The bottom view shows the triggerguard is mounted with a screw and a pin. The brass buttcap is mounted with a single screw. The tapered ramrod passes through an octagon ramrod pipe and matching entry pipe. It has no provisions for threaded accessories, and we recommend our #PL-6-50 to service this pistol. Two domed head lock bolts secure the small Siler flint lock. The patina finished sideplate has an English influence with gently sweeping arcs and a pointed tail.
Finished to match the barrel, the small Siler flintlock has a crisp action and a well hardened frizzen. When using our best 5/8" knapped English gun flints, #FLINT-ENG-5, the lock will throw a shower of sparks into the pan. A stainless steel vent liner is well centered and positioned at the top edge of the pan to provide best ignition. The single trigger provides a smooth release of the lock.
