The straight .45 caliber 7/8" octagon barrel is 35-1/2" in length. The barrel has a browned finish. The top flat of the barrel is marked Dixie Gun Works Union City, Tennessee -Lancaster- .45 Cal. near the breach. The quarter flats are marked Use Black Powder Only and Made in Italy. small brass blade sight is dovetailed behind the muzzle. A flat top rear sight is dovetailed 7" ahead of the breech. Fixed sights are easily adjusted. Trim the height of the blade front sight, to raise your bullet impact to the desired center. Drift the rear sight in its dovetail, right or left, to center your windage.
The stock does not have the classic angular lines of Lancaster County, but instead has a rounded comb similar to Lehigh Valley longrifles. The maple stock has a few dings and marks from field use. The cast patchbox and brass furniture have a speckled patina from long storage. The triggerguard is a mid to late 1800's style with finger spur and curled grip rail. Three ramrod pipes retain the wooden ramrod. The ramrod has a brass tip with 8-32 threads for accessories. The ramrod has been left long and extends past the muzzle by 3/4". The side panel is fitted with a flush mounted brass sideplate. No cheek piece is shaped on the stock.
The color case hardened lock was made in Italy, and we believe it was manufactured by Palmetto. This is a small lock and uses a 5/8" by 3/4" flint. The barrel has a direct drilled vent hole and is positioned correctly to provide for fast ignition. The beech has a few marks from use and cleaning. Double set triggers are correctly adjusted to allow the lock to be cocked, or the trigger set, in any sequence. You may fire the lock with the triggers set or unset. The tiny adjustment screw, between the triggers, controls the trigger release pressure, when set. Slowly turn the screw inboard to lighten trigger release, until you find zero release, where the trigger will not stay latched. Back off the screw about one full turn, for safety.
