The heart of this lovely rifle is its .50 caliber 42" long 7/8" straight octagon barrel. The .50 caliber bore is cut rifled with six equal size lands and square bottom grooves with a slow twist for a patched round ball. The bore is bright and has been well maintained. The barrel was polished bright and is just starting to developed a speckled brown patina in the commonly handled areas from normal firing and cleaning. The barrel is fitted with a flat top rear sight dovetailed 10" ahead of the breech. Many shooters with "older eyes" will find this extra distance easier to use. A nickel silver blade front sight with brass base is dovetailed behind the muzzle. The top barrel flat is signed G.L. Jones behind the rear sight.
The curly maple stock is well finished and creates a dark backdrop for the engraved brass furniture. The classic four petal York County patchbox is well inlet. The side panels, door, and head are all nicely engraved. The patchbox door easily lifts open to reveal a nice sized cavity for storing your extra shooting supplies. The buttplate comb is shaped with five flats and a wedding band. The top flat is neatly engraved, along with the screw. The top view also shows the engraved tang of the breech plug. The single tang bolt is neatly engraved and passes through the stock to engage the trigger plate below. Three small iron pins retain the barrel to the forearm. Engraved nickel silver hunter's stars decorate both sides of the wrist.
The bottom view of the rifle reveals the long decorative brass toeplate with hand engraved border and floral designs. The toeplate reinforces the fragile toe area which is very susceptible to dents and dings. The engraved brass triggerguard is pinned into position. The forearm gently wraps the barrel and is decorated with engraved nickel silver hunter's stars on both sides just behind the ramrod entry pipe. The ramrod is retained by three ramrod pipes, with octagon flats and raised rings. Engtraved nickel silver escutcheons surround the ramrod retaining pins. The wooden ramrod is decorated with a barber pole design and is fitted with a brass tip threaded to accept 8-32 cleaning and loading accessories. A brass muzzlecap rounds out the stock and protects the end grain of the stock. The side view shows the engraved brass sideplate and engraved lock bolts. The cheek is decorated with an engraved nickel silver eagle inlay. A vent pick is retained below the cheek in a nickel silver holder. Engraved nickel silver scroll inlays decorate the buttstock behind the cheek.
Ignition is provided by an L&R American Classic flintlock. Fitted with a heavy mainspring, the lock sparks very well when combined with our #FLINT-ENG-6 hand knapped 3/4" English flints. The lock is polished bright to match the barrel. The tumblers screw is neatly engraved and fire blued to contrast the polished cock. Ignition is assured by the steel vent liner, positioned well above the bottom of the pan, centered on the heat of the flash. If your flint longrifle suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay, study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash. The double lever double set triggers are correctly adjusted, to allow the lock to be cocked, or the triggers set, in any sequence. You may fire the lock with the triggers set, or unset, for target, or hunting. Adjust the screw between the two triggers, inboard to reduce set trigger release pressure, our outboard to require a stronger pressure. The set trigger can provide very light release, perhaps an ounce or two, for accurate aimed shooting during pleasant weather.
