The unique style of Southern Mountain rifles originated from the Western Carolinas into Eastern Tennessee during the late 18th and early 19th century. This used Southern Mountain rifle is stocked in maple and trimmed in limited iron furniture finished to a dark brown. Antique Southern Mountain rifles are often fitted with hardware store locks, and double set triggers. This rifle is fitted with a small Siler percussion lock, and R.E. Davis double lever double set triggers. This unsigned rifle is stocked with a 13" trigger reach, for a smaller or average size shooter. This trim longrifle weighs only 6.3 pounds, and will be a pleasure to carry afield.

The .40 caliber 36" long 13/16"straight octagon barrel is cut rifled with eight equal size lands and square grooves and appears to be the work of Green Mountain Barrel Company with a caliber approprate 1 in 48" slow twist for patched round ball. The bore is bright, clean, and has been well maintained. The exterior is finished to a smooth dark brown, with normal wear in the finish from shooting and cleaning. The full buckhorn rear sight is dovetailed 8-1/4" from the breech. The nickel silver blade front sight set in a brass base is dovetailed 1-1/4" behind the muzzle. The barrel is fitted with a long lollipop tang that extends the length of the wrist.

The maple stock is stained to a medium brown with a golden undertone, and has a few minor handling marks from field use. This mountain rifle is a "poor boy" omitting the buttplate, entry pipe, and muzzle cap. The limited iron furniture is finished to the same dark brown as the barrel. No buttplate is used on this rifle, instead the rear of the buttstock comb is fitted with antler to help protect the heel. An iron toeplate helps protect the toe when loading. The browned iron triggerguard is securely mounted to the stock with screws, traditional for this region. Two iron ramrod pipes secure the wooden ramrod to the rifle. The ramrod is fitted with a brass tip threaded 8-32 for loading and cleaning accessories. No entry pipe or muzzle cap is used on this "poor boy" rifle. The single lock bolt passes through a classic Tennessee style sideplate. The buttstock is shaped with a simple square cheek piece.

Ignition is provided by a small Siler percussion lock. Shaped in the manner of a conversion from flintlock. The lock plate is finished brown to match the barrel. The lock has a strong mainspring, and short hammer travel, for fast lock time. The drum and 1/4-28 stainless steel nipple are well supported by the lock plate. Below the lock a set of R.E. Davis double lever, double set triggers have been installed. The triggers are properly tuned to fire from the set, or unset position. Adjust the screw between the two triggers, inboard to reduce set trigger release pressure, our outboard to require a stronger pressure.

In used condition, this .40 caliber longrifle has a modest weight, percussion lock, sturdy maple stock, and bright well maintained bore.
