This beautiful Maryland style longrifle is stocked is curly maple by contemporary builder Mike Compton. The shaping, tight inletting, and carving show the talent of a highly skilled gun maker. This rifle contains features modeled after the work of John Armstrong of Emmitsburg, Maryland. The curly maple stock has wonderful contrasting stripes from muzzle to butt, best viewed in bright daylight. The raised carving is very neatly done with clean backgrounds, and the brass furniture is hand engraved and polished bright. The 42" tapered octagon barrel and L&R Classic flintlock are finished to a smooth brown. This rifle is offered in as-new unfired condition. Trigger reach is 13-1/2", to fit todays average shooter. This rifle weighs 9.8 pounds and has a balance point at the ramrod entry pipe.

The rifle is assembled around a .40 caliber tapered octagon barrel. The 42" long barrel tapers from 15/16" at the breech to 13/16" at the muzzle. The bore is cut rifled with eight lands and grooves with square bottom rifling with slow twist for shooting patched round balls. The bore is bright, clean, in un-fired condition. The barrel is finished to a smooth chocolate brown. A brass blade front sight is dovetailed behind the muzzle and a flat top rear sight is dovetailed 10" ahead of the breech. Shooters with corrective lenses or "older" eyes will find the extra distance from the breech easier to use.

The curly maple stock was stained to a whiskey brown with golden undertones and finished with hand rubbed oil. A line of raised carving defines the transition from the wrist to the comb. An additional molding runs from the trigger to the toe, giving this longrifle a sleek appearance. Small engraved nickel silver heart inlays decorate the rear of the lock panels. The patchbox is neatly inlet into the dense curly maple stock. Formed from sheet brass the patchbox is very neatly hand engraved and mounted with steel screws. The patchbox door button release is mounted through the toeplate. Beneath the door is a large deep cut cavity for your patches, flints, or jags. Attractive incised and shaped moldings extend from the front of the lock panels. The top view shows the flared thumbnail tang, surrounded by raised carving. A border engraved nickel silver oval inlay decorates the top of the wrist, and is ready to have the new owner's initials engraved. The tapered comb of the buttstock ends in an early 1800's era buttplate. The brass buttplate has a steel insert dovetailed into the heel. A feature found on some original longrifles by John Armstrong. This feature strengthens the heel, which was a common wear point on antique longrifles. The band at the front of the buttplate comb is neatly engraved. The lock panels taper widest at the rear following the gentle taper of the barrel.

The bottom view reveals the tightly fitted brass toeplate with the patchbox button release mounted through it. The toeplate has an engraved border and floral accents. The brass triggerguard is polished bright and is correctly pinned to the stock, the bow is hand engraved with a floral design. The rifle is fitted with a 3/8" diameter ramrod fitted with a tapered steel tip with 8-32 threads for loading and cleaning accessories. Raised carving surrounds the ramrod entry pipe and runs forward along the ramrod channel. A brass muzzle cap protects the end grain of the stock. Our side view shows the engraved brass sideplate with traditional third screw. The raised cheek is inlaid with a large nickel silver inlay, engraved with a federal eagle clutching a sheaf of arrows and olive branch. Raised carving flows down from the comb and transitions into the front edge of the cheek. The stock has a checkered panel beneath the cheek, in the style of John Armstrong. To the rear of the cheek the stock is decorated with raised carved scrolls.

Ignition is provided by this well tuned L&R Classic flint lock with reshaped tail. The cam action angle of the tumbler engages the mainspring. This really speeds lock time. Turned bearing surfaces on the tumbler and sear minimize friction, essential during cold weather hunting. Improved cock geometry allows a shorter stroke, with better sparks thrown squarely into the pan. The lock plate is engraved M. Compton and is lightly border engraved. The bottom of the pan is engraved #131. We recommend using our best 3/4" hand knapped flints for use in this lock. The single trigger is pinned to provide a smooth release of the lock. Fast ignition is assured by the stainless steel White Lightnin' vent liner, positioned well above the bottom of the pan, centered on the heat of the flash. If your flint longrifle suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay, study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash.
