This antique English flint double shotgun is stocked in walnut and trimmed in iron furniture. The barrel center rib is marked Carlisle. The 20 gauge smoothbore barrels are both dark and pitted. The stock has multiple repaired cracks. The barrels are fitted with hooked breeches and are mounted with a single wedge key. Converted to percussion during its working life, this double barrel shotgun was recently reconverted back to flintlock using a combination of modern L&R and Siler lock parts. Trigger reach is 13" and 14", and the weight is 6.8 pounds.

The barrels are 30" long including the hooked breech. The 20 gauge bores are .628" diameter. The bores are both dark and pitted. The barrels have a darkly mottled gray patina with scattered areas of freckling throughout. The upper rib is marked Carlisle. A small silver bead is mounted in the center rib just behind the muzzles. The hooked breech allows the barrels to be easily dismounted without tools, for easy cleaning. The hooked breeches are decorated with inlaid gold bands and the tang is engraved with a floral pattern. This shotgun has inset breeches, which makes the lock panels narrower. The bottom of both barrels are marked with various post 1813 English proof marks.

Trimmed in iron furniture, the walnut wrist and forearm are checkered. The stock has been refinished and the checkering is barely visible in areas. The bottom of the stock has a repaired crack running from the triggerguard finial up to the left lock plate. A repaired 3" long crack in the left side of the wrist runs from the rear of the triggerguard up through the checkering. A repaired crack extends forward from the left lock panel up to the barrel channel. Further up, a 2" long repaired crack extends back from the barrel channel into the left side of the forearm. A 2-1/2" repaired crack is found in the same location on the right side of the forearm. A shorter 1/2" repaired crack is found just forward of this one. A 1-1/2" long repaired crack extends back from the top of the ramrod entry pipe on the right side of the forearm. There are two 1/2" drying cracks extending forward from the buttplate on the right side of the buttstock. A repaired chip is found on the tail of the right lock panel.

The traditional wide flat buttplate reduces recoil and makes the gun comfortable with full loads. The iron buttplate is shaped with a long comb and is mounted with engraved screws. The comb is decorated with an engraved flying dove. A small silver oval inlay is found on the top of the wrist. The tang of hooked breech is neatly engraved and shaped with a groove to allow sighting along the upper rib. The single wedge key is slotted, but does not have a capture pin installed to prevent loss. The key passes through silver escutcheon plates on both sides. The bottom view shows the rounded toe, wide flat buttplate, and engraved iron triggerguard. The tapered wooden ramrod is not fitted with any tips. It passes through two round pipes and an engraved entry pipe. A beaver tail cheek is shaped on the buttstock for a right hand shooter.

Converted to percussion during its working life, this double shotgun was recently reconverted back to flintlock using a combination of L&R and Siler parts. The plates have the same mottled gray patina as the barrels. We were not able to make out the markings on the plates due to the textured patina. The pans, frizzens, and frizzen springs are from modern large Siler locks. The cocks and top jaws are from modern L&R John Bailes locks. These parts do not have the same patina as found on the plates. Both locks function correctly and securely hold the half and full cock notches. The touch hole liners are well positioned, centered above the pans for fast ignition. The triggers both provide a smooth release of the locks.
