From above the 12" octagon-to-round polished bright barrel can be seen. The barrel is octagon the first 4" with a smooth transition to round tapering with a flare at the muzzle. The smooth bore measure .620" at the muzzle and is bright, clean, and ready to shoot. A rounded brass blade front sight is soldered behind the muzzle. No rear sight is fitted on this point and shoot pistol. At the rear of the barrel the flared thumbnail tang can be seen. A single tang bolt passes through the stock and engages the trigger plate below. Two small iron pins retain the barrel to the forearm.
The walnut stock has been stained a medium brown and was finished with a gloss varnish that was then rubbed back to produce the satin sheen now visible on the gun. Behind the tang the grip of the pistol drops quickly away from the level of the barrel. A raised beaver tail carving surrounds the tang, which matches the carving around the lock panels. Our bottom view shows off the brass grip cap with grotesque mask retainer, long triggerguard, as well as the ramrod pipes. A raised beaver tail surrounds the entry pipe and flows upward to run along the ramrod channel. The wooden ramrod is fitted with a flared brass loading tip. We recommend our #PL-8 to service this pistol. A brass band is wrapped around the forearm to keep the end grain from splitting. The backside view of the gun shows the large brass sideplate, and two lock bolts that pass through to engage the lock opposite, holding both lock and sideplate in position. Note the extension of the grip cap that runs up both sides of the grip, a common feature on military pistols of the time.
The Germanic style flintlock by L&R is polished bright to match the barrel. The lock has strong springs and should spark nicely, the frizzen only shows signs of having been sparked once or twice for testing. We note the trigger can overpower the lock in the half-cock notch. A stainless steel vent liner is well positioned on the side of the barrel. If your flint longrifle suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay, study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash.
