Ready to shoot, the 38" long swamped octagon Colerain barrel has a .45 caliber bore rifled with six lands and radius grooves with a slow twist for a tightly patched round ball. Colerain rifle barrels are the favorite choice of today's best muzzle loading gun makers, because knowledgeable shooters demand Colerain's accuracy, inside and outside. Founded by two entrepreneurs, Scott Keller and Scott Kelly were tutored by Bob Paris, the famous rifle barrel maker who was first to perfect the technique for production of correct swamped barrels. Colerain rifle barrels are drilled from solid steel, cut rifled with six “round bottom" grooves. Called “radius groove rifling", Colerain eliminates the sharp inside corner that accumulates fouling. The swamped barrel is thickest at the breech, tapers to a narrow waist, and flares at the muzzle. The barrel is finished to a streaky patina gray finish. An iron blade front sight is dovetailed 2" behind the muzzle. We note the front sight dovetail is cut at a slight angle, tipping the front of the sight upward. The flat top rear sight is dovetailed 10" forward of the breech. The rear sight only has a small indicator notch in the center, the new owner will have to file the notch deeper to their preferred sight picture. The top flat is signed M. Avance just ahead of the breech.
Stocked in maple, the stock is finished to a whiskey brown with golden undertones. The iron buttplate is wide and flat to best spread the recoil over a large area. The buttplate is shaped with broad flats and a filed wedding band across the comb. The steel "peanut" shaped patchbox is finished to match the iron furniture. The patchbox doors both open and latch securely. Deep cavities are found under the doors for storing extra shooting accessories. The iron triggerguard has a wide bow to accept the Germanic style double lever double set triggers. A small amount of filler is found at the front and rear of the triggerguard. No toeplate is fitted, instead the buttplate extends just slightly past the stock to provide some protection. An entry pipe with long skirt, and two forward pipes mount the 3/8" ramrod. The ramrod is fitted with a brass tip with 8-32 threads to accept loading and shooting accessories. An iron muzzle cap protects the end grain of the forearm. We note a large cosmetic gap on the left side of the muzzle cap, and a dent on the right side. The iron sideplate is inlet flush with the side panel and a simple square cheek is shaped for a comfortable rest when aiming.
Sure-fire ignition is provided by this large Siler flint lock. Finished to a silvery gray, the lock plate has a hand forged appearance. The frizzen is unfinished and shows only a single mark from test sparking. We recommend our 3/4" knapped flints for best performance in this lock. A slotted stainless steel vent liner is well positioned above the bottom of the pan, centered on the heat of the flash. If your flint longrifle suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay, study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash.
The double lever double set triggers have a long Germanic style rear trigger. These set triggers are properly tuned to fire from the set, or unset position. You can set the triggers with the cock in any position. Adjust the screw between the two triggers, inboard to reduce set trigger release pressure, our outboard to require a stronger pressure. When screwed fully inboard, the adjustment screw disables the rear trigger, so the rifle must be fired from the front trigger, which requires about a four pound pull for release. It is wise to disable the rear trigger, when hunting in very cold weather. But the set trigger can provide very light release, perhaps an ounce or two, for accurate aimed shooting during pleasant weather.
