Halfstock Pistol,
.50 caliber, 10-1/2" barrel,
Siler flintlock, maple, iron trim,
used, marked R. Gregg
The browned .50 caliber 10-1/2" octagon barrel is cut rifled with seven equal sized lands and wide grooves with a slow twist for shooting patched round balls. The flat top rear sight is dovetailed just ahead of the breech. This allows for maximum sight radius on this pistol. The front sight is a nickel silver blade with a copper base. We note some scratches in the brown finish around the front sight. The right flat of the octagon barrel is stamped 311 above the lock panel. A single wedge key retains the barrel, and the hooked breech allows the barrel to be dismounted for easy cleaning.
The maple stock has a bag butt profile, which fits a large man's hand well. The stock has a few minor handling marks from use. The stock is trimmed in browned steel furniture to match the barrel. The triggerguard is shaped with a finger spur. A browned iron ramrod entry pipe is found just behind the pewter nose cap. The pistol is fitted with a 3/8" diameter ramrod, fitted with a brass tip, threaded 10-32 for your shooting accessories. The two lock bolts pass directly through the stock without the use of sideplates to retain the lock on the opposite side.
This pistol is fitted with a small Siler flintlock finished to a matte gray. The plate is stamped R. Gregg just below the pan. This lock has a strong mainspring and we recommend our 5/8" knapped flints, #FLINT-AMBER-5. Close inspection shows the adjustment screw of the single set trigger, located behind the trigger. Pushing the trigger forward sets it for a light release. Due to the geometry of this trigger, the trigger must be set before the lock can be cocked on this pistol. The steel vent liner is directly above the center of the flash pan, high enough to serve as a window on the hottest part of the flash. If your flint longrifle suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay, study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash.
