The .54 caliber Green Mountain 1" straight octagon rifle barrel is cut rifled with eight deep lands and grooves in a caliber appropriate 1 in 70" twist, ideal for tightly patched round balls. Green Mountain Muzzle Loading Rifle Barrels are machined from high quality American made bar stock, A.I.S.I. 1137 modified, stress relieved, annealed, certified rifle barrel quality steel. All barrels are drilled from solid stock, reamed to a high degree of smoothness, then optically checked for straightness. Very close tolerances are maintained. The rear sight is a semi-buck horn sight dovetailed 8" ahead of the breech. The front sight is a nickel silver blade in a copper dovetail base that is dovetailed 1-1/2" behind the muzzle. Together, these sights work well and look right on this nice Hawken rifle. The top flat of the .54 caliber Green Mountain barrel is signed by the maker, G. B. Nelson. The bore is bright, clean, and ready to shoot.
The maple stock is stained to a whiskey tone, with gold highlights and brown depths finished to a satin egg shell finish. The stock has many handling marks from field use. We note a 1" chip along the top of the barrel channel on the left side of the forearm. The stock is trimmed in iron furniture with a classic Hawken crescent buttplate that securely engages your shoulder. The forend is fitted with a poured pewter muzzle cap. The hooked breech allows for instant take-down. Remove the ramrod, put the lock on half-cock, press the keys past the under lugs, and the barrel can be lifted from the stock for easy cleaning. The wedge keys have capture pins to avoid being misplaced.
The top view shows the long tang of the hooked breech. Both tang screws engage the long steel trigger plate, forming a strong steel sandwich that reinforces the wrist from above and below. This was one of Jacob and Sam Hawken's secrets. If a rifle becomes broken, it will most likely be broken at the wrist, the thinnest section of the rifle stock. The triggerplate and tang reinforce the wrist, strengthening this critical area, making the Hawken rifle reliable, durable, and famous. This rifle has an early style flat-to-wrist trigger guard. The beaver tail toeplate protects the pointed toe while loading. This percussion rifle is made to accept a sturdy 7/16" ramrod. The ramrod is fitted with a iron tip threaded 8-32 for loading and cleaning accessories. Notice the typical beaver tail cheek rest and single lock bolt fitted to a recessed steel escutcheon, all classic features of an 1840 era Hawken rifle.
The L&R percussion Hawken lock has been browned to a smooth finish. The lock has a strong mainspring, stirrup link, and fly detent, all nice internal features. The percussion lock has a square inside corner, the lock panel gently fades up into the bolster of the lock. The straight hooked-breech is fitted with a standard 1/4-28 stainless steel nipple for No. 11 percussion caps. L&R early double lever double set triggers are tuned to fire the lock set, or unset. The lock and triggers may be cocked or set in any sequence.
