When viewed from above the 10" long .50 caliber barrel can be seen. Fit with a small flat top rear sight 2-1/2" forward of the breech, the barrel also has a nickel silver front sight set in a copper base dovetailed 3/4" behind the muzzle. The left oblique flat of the barrel is stamped with the factory markings Connecticut Valley Arms, Inc. Black Powder Only .50 Cal. Spain along with the serial number near the breech. Finished a smooth chocolate brown, while the bore has been well maintained.
The hooked breech allows the barrel to be easily dismounted for cleaning without risk of wetting the stock with water containing black powder residue. To dismount the barrel, put the lock on half cock, withdraw the ramrod, drift the key past the underlug, and the barrel can be lifted from the barrel channel for ease of cleaning. Remove the nipple and place the breech end of the barrel in a bucket of soapy water. Run a wet patch down and up the bore, the pumping action will flush all the fouling from the barrel. Once the bore is clean, run a dry patch down the bore to pick up any moisture followed by an oily patch. Dry and oil the exterior then reassemble the pistol.
The beech stock is finished to a medium brown and has a few small handling marks. The right side of the grip is decorated with brass tacks. The brass triggerguard is shaped with a wide bow with a finger spur. We note the tip of the triggerguard grip rail is broken all the way through the screw hole. The ramrod is fitted with a flared brass tip with no provisions for threaded accessories. We recommend our #PL-6-50 to service this pistol. Two lock bolts pass through simple brass washer style sideplates to mount the lock. The Hawken pistol percussion lock is factory color case hardened and has a strong mainspring. The lock has a few scattered speckles of patina on the hammer. A stainless steel nipple for No. 11 caps is fitted to the powder drum. The brass trigger requires firm pressure to release the lock.
