The 44" octagon-to-round barrel is .54 caliber smoothbore. Use a patched round ball or shot with our 28 gauge cards and wads. The bore is bright, clean, and has been well maintained. The barrel is octagon the first 14-3/4" with a single wedding band transition before turning round to the muzzle. The barrel has a silvery-brown patina finish and is unsigned. A nickel silver front sight is soldered well behind the muzzle and the flat top rear sight with long decorative finial is dovetailed 11" from the breech.
The butt-stock has a Germanic influence with a wide, tall, nearly flat hand forged iron buttplate. The stock has a few minor handling marks, and is stained dark and rubbed back in the frequently handled areas to create a patina finish. The top view shows the flared tang of the breech plug that is surrounded with a beaver tail incised carving. Carving also decorates the transition from the comb to the wrist and flows down and back into the buttstock. The wooden patchbox door slides open to reveal a deep cut cavity for storing extra flints and shooting accessories. A small copper plate is nailed in the center of the patchbox cavity. The plate is stamped J B E / 1997 in two lines. A single line of incised carving runs along the toe line on both sides of the buttstock.
Our bottom view shows that no toeplate is fitted to protect this area of the stock. The hand forged iron triggerguard is shaped with a long grip rail, and the copper rivet can be seen where the rail attaches to the bow. The triggerguard is retained to the stock with two screws. A small line of incised carving extends forward from the rear of the lock panels up into the forearm where it terminates at the barrel channel. A line of incised carving also runs along the ramrod channel. The 3/8" wooden ramrod passes through patina finished ramrod pipes and matching entry pipe. The ramrod is fitted with an iron tip threaded to accept 8-32 cleaning and loading accessories. A poured pewter muzzle cap protects the end grain of the stock. Our back view shows the Germanic influence with the large iron sideplate that fills the side panel. The sideplate is mounted with two domed head lock bolts. The square cheek piece is decorated with two lines of incised carving. The buttstock behind the cheek is decorated with raised carved scrolls. Two wire loops under the cheek are used to secure a hand forged iron vent pick.
Sometimes called a "Queen Anne" lock, this best quality round faced flint lock actually dates from the 1730 to 1770 era, well after Anne's reign ended. Jim Chamber's "Virginia Fowler" lock has a tall cock to sweep a wide arc of sparks, making these larger locks among the best sparking locks. The pan has a bridle arm to support the frizzen pivot screw, not always found on early English locks. Be sure to order a dozen of our best #FLINT-ENG-7 hand knapped 7/8" English gun flints. Fast ignition is assured by the stainless steel vent liner, positioned well above the bottom of the pan, centered on the heat of the flash. If your flint longrifle suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay, study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash. The single hand forged trigger provides a smooth release of the lock.
