The .50 caliber barrel is 32" length, 1" straight octagon. The bore is rifled with a slow twist for a patched round ball. The bore is bright, however it does have some visible machining marks from manufacturing. The exterior is finished to a dark brown. Fitted with a semi-buckhorn rear sight, with screw adjustment for elevation; the front sight is a silver blade in brass sight base. The front sight is dovetailed 1-1/4" behind the muzzle, while the rear sight blade is positioned 6-1/2" forward of the action. The barrel is stamped Mowrey 50 on the right oblique flat near the breech.
Stocked in curly maple, the two piece stock has been finished a dark brown with golden undertones to reveal the nice figured stripes in the wood. The stock does not show any handling marks. The buttplate has a modest curve to engage the shooter's shoulder. The triggerguard has a threaded boss, which is screwed into the action. The tail of the guard is retained by a steel screw mounted into the stock. The iron ramrod pipes are soldered tightly to the bottom flat of the octagon barrel. No under rib is used in this design. A 3/8" wooden ramrod serves the bore. The ramrod is fitted with a brass tip with concave end for loading, the opposite end is fitted with a brass tip threaded to accept 10-32 cleaning and loading accessories.
Rugged and simple, original gun makers such as the famous Edwin Wesson used the box lock action in their best rifles. This rifle has a steel action and steel breech plug for strength. The breech is fitted with a stainless steel nipple for #11 caps. Internally very simple, the tumbler has a set screw to control the trigger engagement in the full cock position. The single trigger has high leverage, for smooth trigger release.
