The .45 caliber octagon barrel is finished brown and measures 38" in length. The top flat of the barrel is faintly stamped Hatfield between the breech and rear sight. The rifle is fitted with a full flat top rear sight and browned steel blade front sight. Rifled with eight equal lands and grooves with a slow twist for a tightly patched round ball. The bore appears bright and clean ready for use.
The iron buttplate is neatly formed from sheet stock with a brazed joint at the heel, a design commonly used on antique Appalachian rifles. A few very plain primitive Tennessee rifles omit the buttplate. This correct and sturdy buttplate will protect the end grain of the buttstock during use. The triggerguard is a classic designs found on longrifles from the Carolinas with a curved spoon on the grip rail. The top view shows the slight taper of the comb, from the wrist to the buttplate.
A long iron toeplate been fitted to the rifle. The iron triggerguard is retained with pins both front and rear. The barrel is fitted to the stock with three wedge keys fitted without the use of escutcheon plates. The 3/8" diameter ramrod is secured to the rifle though three browned iron ramrod pipes. The ramrod is fitted with a steel tip with 8-32 threads for loading and cleaning accessories. The buttstock is fitted with a square cheek piece for right hand shooters. Not highly decorated, this rifle has no engraving, carving, or inlays in traditional fashion.
Sure fire ignition is provided by a large Siler flintlock. The lock has a Germanic influence with a octagon pan and pointed tail with a vertical molding. The tip of the tail has been fitted with a nickel silver overlay for a small amount of decoration. The inside edge of the frizzen has been replaced with a thin brass inset. We recommend our 3/8" knapped English gun flints for use with this lock. The stainless steel touch hole liner brings the main charge very close to the priming flash. This vent is perfectly centered over the pan, correctly positioned to find the hottest center of the ignition flash.
Double lever double set triggers by R. E. Davis are tuned to allow the lock to be cocked, or the trigger set, in any sequence. Adjust the screw between the two triggers, inboard to reduce set trigger release pressure, our outboard to require a stronger pressure. When screwed fully inboard, the adjustment screw disables the rear trigger, so the rifle must be fired from the front trigger, which requires about a four pound pull for release. It is wise to disable the rear trigger, when hunting in very cold weather. But the set trigger can provide very light release, perhaps an ounce or two, for accurate aimed shooting during pleasant weather.
