The .45 caliber barrel is 13/16" straight octagon, 36" in length. The Green Mountain barrel is cut rifled with eight lands and grooves with a 1 in 60" slow twist ideal for patched round ball. We recommend our Hornady .440" diameter round ball with a .015" patch, lubed with our Mink oil tallow, for best accuracy. The flat top rear sight is dovetailed 9-1/4" ahead of the breech. The nickel silver blade front sight is dovetailed behind the muzzle.
The brass buttplate was polished bright and has aged to a mellow patina. The deep crescent buttplate and angular lines are all common to the Ohio school of gun making. The forearm is fitted with a engraved nickel silver escutcheon plate around the wedge pin. The tip of the forend is fitted with a poured pewter forend cap. Viewed from the top, the barrel and pointed breech plug are finished a nice chocolate brown. The buttstock comb is long and slim, and holds very comfortably.
Our bottom view shows the brass toeplate, which protects the critical toe area during loading. The toeplate is attached with two steel screws. The triggerguard is polished brass, with a large bow to accept the double set triggers. This Ohio style triggerguard has a curved grip rail with finger spurs, often found on Ohio and later Pennsylvania longrifles. A slender ramrod is fitted, which is common on Vincent rifles. The ramrod has a brass end with 8-32 threads for loading and cleaning accessories. The side panel is fitted with a classic flush mounted sideplate. The side panel is very trim and neatly shaped.
The 1830 to 1850 era R.E.Davis assembled Siler Mountain caplock is modeled after popular hardware store locks from the period. We have examined many antique rifles with similar shaped locks. This attractive medium size rifle lock is based on Siler internal lock parts, should parts ever be required. The percussion drum is well supported and fitted with a steel .1/4-28 threaded nipple. Order our #RST-I should you ever need a spare. The R.E. Davis double lever double set triggers will fire from a set or unset position, and can be adjusted for trigger pull in the set position. Adjust the screw between the two triggers, inboard to reduce set trigger release pressure, or outboard to require a stronger pressure. The set trigger can provide very light release, perhaps an ounce or two, for accurate aimed shooting during pleasant weather.
