The Colerain .40 caliber 32" barrel is 7/8" straight octagon. The bore is rifled with six equal size lands and radius bottom grooves with a slow twist for a tightly patched round ball. Colerain rifle barrels are the favorite choice of today's best muzzle loading gun makers, because knowledgeable shooters demand Colerain's accuracy, inside and outside. Colerain rifle barrels are drilled from solid steel, cut rifled with six "round bottom" grooves. Called "radius groove rifling", Colerain eliminates the sharp inside corner that accumulates fouling. Radius groove rifling cutters are a bit more expensive to make, but Colerain's customers agree that the accuracy, easy loading, and easy cleaning are worth the cost. The barrel is fitted with an iron blade front sight dovetailed 1-1/4" behind the muzzle and a flat top rear sight dovetailed 10" ahead of the breech. The barrel is finished to a smooth chocolate brown. The left oblique flat is engraved JAW 154 near the breech.
The curly maple stock has been stained to a warm brown with a golden undertone to best display the swirls of figure over the length of the stock. The buttstock is fitted with a brass buttplate with a modest curve to engage the shooter's shoulder in 19th century fashion. A single bolt passes through the rounded tang to engage the trigger plate below. The tang bolt slot is neatly aligned with the barrel. The barrel is retained to the forearm with two brass pins surrounded by brass escutcheons. A poured pewter forend cap protects the end grain of the stock. The bottom view shows the toe of the rifle is fitted with a short brass toeplate and is correctly mounted with steel screws. The steel mounting screws have the slots neatly aligned with the barrel. The triggerguard is secured to the stock with a pin and the front is secured to the trigger plate with an internal screw. The 5/16" diameter ramrod is fitted with a brass tip with 8-32 threads for loading and cleaning accessories. The ramrod passes through a brass entry pipe and two brass ramrod pipes soldered to the barrel under rib. The square cheek is decorated with two lines of molding and a brass hunter's star inlay. The brass sideplate is engraved with a floral pattern.
The L&R percussion lock has been browned to match the barrel. The drum and nipple are well supported by the lock plate, critical on this style of ignition. The drum is fitted with a steel nipple for No. 11 percussion caps. The Davis double lever double set triggers are properly adjusted to fire from the set, or unset position. You may set the triggers before, or after cocking the lock. Adjust the screw between the two triggers, inboard to reduce set trigger release pressure, our outboard to require a stronger pressure. The set trigger can provide very light release, perhaps an ounce or two, for accurate aimed shooting during pleasant weather.
