The .50 caliber straight octagon Colerain barrel is 42" from the muzzle to the breech. The barrel is a slender 7/8" octagon across the flats. The octagon corners of the barrel are crisp and square. Finished a lovely chocolate brown, the tone of the brown finish is a nice compliment to the maple stock with it's subtle golden undertone. The .50 caliber bore is bright and clean, cut rifled with six radius grooves with a 1 in 56" twist for a tightly patched round ball. We recommend our, #BALL-490, .490" round balls, #OX-18-50-D, .018" Ox-Yoke ticking patches for accurate shooting. The fixed rear sight is a classic Tennessee style with a flat top. Drift it right or left in its dovetail, to correct windage. The front sight is a traditional silver blade in a copper dovetail base. Trim the blade, to raise bullet impact to point of aim. The barrel is signed G. B. NELSON and CXXIII on the top flat.
The maple stock is trimmed in browned iron furniture with a crescent steel buttplate and triggerguard with a hand forged profile. The stock has a slender attractive shape and the forearm is shaped with the angular panels found on rifles from that region. Our top view shows the long lollipop tang of the breech plug. Two tang bolts, are neatly fitted with slots aligned with the barrel. The rich chocolate brown color of the barrel, lock, and iron hardware is smooth and well finished.
The bottom view reveals the long iron toeplate. The toeplate is retained with two iron screws, fire blued, with slots aligned. The toe plate is well fitted, with a very simple Tennessee style finial at front. The slender iron hand forged style Tennessee style triggerguard is retained by a combination of pins and screws. The 3/8" diameter ramrod is fitted with a brass tip with 8-32 female threads for loading and cleaning accessories and a brass band to protect the end grain on the opposite end. The lozenge shaped sideplate is retained by a single lock bolt, the steel sideplate is mounted flush, and finished to a silvery gray. The square cheek piece gives the shooter a comfortable rest while aligning the sights.
This rifle is fitted with a L&R Durs Egg flintlock. Perhaps London's most innovative lock and gun maker, Mr. Durs Egg immigrated from Switzerland, setting up shop in London, the world's arms making center in his time. Cock jaws direct sparks into the semi-waterproof pan with rain gutters. The fancy frizzen pan cover flange seals the pan. The fancy “frictionless" tumbler and sear have raised bearing rings turned around screw holes, preventing moving parts from rubbing the plate or bridle. We recommend our 3/4" knapped English flints for best performance in this lock.
The double lever double set trigger is properly adjusted to allow the lock to be cocked, or the trigger set, in any sequence. Correct geometry gives this rifle a very smooth trigger release. Adjust the screw between the two triggers, inboard to reduce set trigger release pressure, our outboard to for firmer pressure. The set trigger can provide very light release, perhaps an ounce or two, for accurate aimed shooting during pleasant weather.
A stainless steel vent liner is positioned well above the bottom of the pan, centered on the heat of the flash. If your flint longrifle suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay, study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash.
