The 42" length .50 caliber Rice swamped octagon barrel is thickest at the breech, tapers to a narrow waist, and flares at the muzzle. The barrel is cut rifled with seven deep radius bottom grooves, in a slow twist, for use with a patched round ball. The bore is bright, clean, and ready to shoot. The barrel is fire blued and fitted with a nickel silver blade front sight set in a brass base dovetailed behind the muzzle. The flat top rear sight is dovetailed 10-3/4" ahead of the breech. The barrel is signed R. Buchanan behind the rear sight.
Rice Muzzle Loading Rifle Barrels are set between centers and milled octagonal, insuring a centered bore, concentric with the exterior, with no "run-out". Each barrel is stress relieved in an atmosphere controlled electric furnace, to eliminate work hardening or barrel warp, and to dampen harmonic vibrations or barrel whip. After the rifling has been cut, each bore is "ball burnished". A carbide bore-sizing die is pulled through the barrel, to insure bore dimension uniformity, eliminating any tight or loose spots inside the barrel. This critical procedure leaves the top of the lands smooth and polished, equaling the traditional lead lapping procedure. Rice barrels are Match grade quality, with bench rest capability. Rice barrels do not require lapping or extensive shooting to break-in.
The maple stock is finished to an amber brown with medium sheen. The buttplate has a gently curved profile, and should be comfortable under the recoil of full loads fired from the .50 caliber barrel. The buttstock is fitted with an engraved brass patchbox. Push down on the patchbox release spring to open the door to reveal a deep cavity for storing flints, jags, or other shooting accessories. The engraved patchbox is mounted with steel screws. The flared thumbnail tang is surrounded by raised carving that flows down into the lock panels. A single tang bolt passes through the stock and engages the trigger plate below. Four steel pins retain the barrel to the forearm. Incised carving decorates the transition from the comb to the wrist and flows down both sides of the buttstock. A line of incised carving runs along the toe of the buttstock creating a slimming effect before terminating at the trigger plate.
The bottom view shows the short toeplate that is installed with a single screw. The Germanic style brass triggerguard is mounted with a combination of screw and pin. Decorative octagon ramrod pipes support the hickory ramrod that is fitted with a brass tip. The opposite end is fitted with a steel tip that is threaded 8-32 for cleaning and loading accessories. Raised carving surrounds the ramrod entry pipe and flows upward before transitioning into a line of incised carving that runs along the entire length of the ramrod channel. A brass muzzle cap is fitted to help protect the end grain of the stock. The back view shows the large brass sideplate, with two domed lock bolts, and the simple squared Kentucky rifle style cheek-piece. The cheek is decorated with two lines of incised carving. Raised and incised carving decorates the area behind the cheek.
Ignition is provided by Jim Chambers' deluxe Siler flint lock, tuned for best performance. The beefy mainspring provides lots of energy, and this fast lock will throw sparks on the carpet. The lock is fire blued to match the barrel. We recommend using our #FLINT-ENG-6 best English 3/4" flints for use in this lock. Fitted with a wide single trigger. Correct geometry gives this rifle a very smooth trigger release. Fast ignition is assured by the direct drilled touch hole, positioned well above the bottom of the pan, centered on the heat of the flash. If your flint longrifle suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay, study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash.
