This contract musketoon or artillery carbine with 22" barrel is marked Barnett London on the lock plate and has a large cartouche on the buttstock. This antique has some scattered handling marks on the stock and a few small drying cracking. The lock is crisp and the bore is bright. This musketoon appears to be seen little use over the last 150+ years.
Made for the caliber .577 hollow base Minie bullet that allowed quick reloading, achieved fine accuracy, and much longer range than the round ball muskets of an earlier generation. The barrel measures 22" from the muzzle to the breech, which adds about 1" of extra length. The bore is rifled with three wide lands and grooves and is in excellent condition mostly bright with a few small speckles. The barrel is fitted with a military style front sight. The rear sight has a V notch and two additional leaves, one is stamped 200, the taller 500. The breech is stamped with English proof marks. The blue finish on the barrel has aged to a brown.
Stocked in what appears to be beach stained as walnut. The stock has some scattered handling marks with the majority concentrated on the buttstock and the side panel. The furniture is tightly inlet in typical English fashion and the stock does have a few small drying checks from compressing against the furniture. Both lock bolt washers have small checks, the breech has a small check from the corner, the lock panel also has a small check at the tail. The oval cartouche stamped Barnett Gunmakers London is clearly visible. The side panel is stamped with a W.R. marking across the tail of the panel. Two identical crown over 1 stamps are stamped in the stock behind the triggerguard. The brass buttplate, triggerguard, and muzzle cap, are retained with screws neatly fitted with the slots aligned with the barrel. The two barrel bands have a brown patina. Sling swivels are mounted, for a military sling.
