Pennsylvania Longrifle,
.50 caliber, 42" Green Mountain barrel,
Chambers flintlock, maple, brass,
new, by George Nelson
The 42" length .50 caliber Green Mountain 7/8" straight barrel is finished to an even chocolate brown, and the top flat is signed G.B. Nelson. The .50 caliber bore is rifled with eight equal lands and grooves with slow twist for a tightly patched round ball. The bore is bright, in unfired condition. We recommend our .490" pure lead round ball, patched with .015" Ox-Yoke patching over a charge of 2Fg black powder, if you require best accuracy. Green Mountain Muzzle Loading Rifle Barrels are machined from high quality American made bar stock, A.I.S.I. 1137 modified, stress relieved, annealed, certified rifle barrel quality steel. All barrels are drilled from solid stock, reamed to a high degree of smoothness, then optically checked for straightness. Very close tolerances are maintained. The barrel is fitted with a silver blade front sight set in a brass base dovetailed 1-1/4" behind the muzzle. The flat top rear sight is dovetailed 8-1/2" ahead of the breech.
The buttstock has the angular lines of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. The stock is stained to a warm brown with golden undertones. The buttstock is fitted with a brass patchbox with button release in the buttplate comb. Push the button to reveal a cut cavity for storing flints, jags, or other shooting accessories. The comb of the brass buttplate features three flats and wedding band transition. The buttplate has a pleasant curve, comfortable to aim, it engages your shoulder to minimize recoil. Further up raised carving defines the transition from comb to wrist. A panel of raised carving frames the lock panel.
The bottom view shows the brass toeplate that is secured with an iron screw. The brass trigger guard is correctly mounted with a pin up front and a screw in the rear. A raised molding runs the length of the forearm, terminating at the rear entry pipe. The brass muzzle cap protects the end grain of the stock. The wooden ramrod passes through two brass thimbles and matching entry pipe. The ramrod has a barber pole finish and is fitted with a brass band to protect the end grain, the opposite end is fitted with a brass tip threaded to accept 8-32 cleaning and loading accessories. A raised carved C scroll accents the classic cheek piece, with molded edge. The large brass sideplate has two bolts that pass through the stock to engage the lock on the opposite side.
Ignition for the rifle is provided by a Jim Chambers' deluxe Siler flintlock. The expertly assembled lock has a heavy mainspring and excellent internals. The lock is finished to a dark brown to match the barrel. We recommend our 3/4" knapped English flints for best performance in this lock. The stainless steel touch hole liner is properly positioned on the pan, centered on the heat of the flash. If your flint longrifle suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay, study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash. Below the lock a set of double lever, double set triggers has been installed. Properly tuned and adjusted the triggers can be fired from either the set or unset position. Adjust the screw between the two triggers, inboard to reduce set trigger release pressure, our outboard to require a stronger pressure. The set trigger can provide very light release, perhaps an ounce or two, for accurate aimed shooting during pleasant weather.
