CVA Mountain Rifle,
.50 caliber, 32" barrel,
percussion, maple, iron trim,
used, from a kit by Connecticut Valley Arms
The .50 caliber bore is rifled with a slow twist for a patched round ball. The bore appears bright and has been well maintained. The 32" barrel is fitted with a rear sight that is screw adjustable for elevation. The front sight is a nickel silver blade with an iron base. The brown finish on the barrel has a mottled appearance. The left oblique flat is marked .50 Cal Connecticut Valley Arms, Inc. Black Powder Only along with the serial number.
This rifle is stocked in maple finished to a medium brown. The stock has many small handling marks from field use. The nickel silver capbox has a cam over center lid and opens and closes securely. The fit on the steel buttplate is fair with some visible gaps. The triggerguard has a wide bow to accept the double lever double set triggers and is finished bright with some speckling. The pewter nose cap protects the end grain of the stock and serves as a ramrod entry pipe. The raised beaver tail cheekpiece is shaped for a right hand shooter. The top view shows the short tang that anchors the hooked breech. Two steel keys retain the .50 caliber barrel. Remove the ramrod, withdraw the keys, an the barrel will lift out for easy cleaning. Clean it with hot soapy water, dry, oil, and re-assemble. The factory wooden ramrod is fitted with a brass loading tip. The opposite end has a 10-32 threaded brass tip to accept cleaning accessories.
The Maslin style percussion conversion lock has a fly detent in the tumbler, to allow the use of the double set triggers. The lock features a tiny internal screw, cleverly arranged to adjust sear engagement in the full cock notch. The double lever double set triggers are adjustable for both trigger release and backlash. The triggers are currently adjusted to fire from the set, or unset position. You can set the triggers before, or after cocking the lock. Unset the front trigger requires firm pressure. Once the rear trigger is set the front trigger is very light.
Assembled from a kit it could be used as-is, or the stock does have enough material to trim the lock panels and slim the forearm. Order it for a ten day visual inspection. You will be delighted. Else if it does not fit you, return it in unfired condition for same-day refund. Postage is your only risk, when you order any one-of-a-kind gun from Track, whether new, used, or antique.
