The 32" Damascus barrels have aged to a speckled gray brown over the full length of the barrels. The bores both are bright, but do have a few areas of minor pitting. The rib between the two barrels is solid with a textured surface to reduce mirage. The breech end of the rib is stamped REMINGTON ARMS CO, ILION, N.Y. U.S.A.. A large bead sight is located just behind the muzzle. The barrels are chambered for a 12 gauge 2-5/8" long shot shell. Only use black powder shot shells in this Damascus barreled shotgun. Never load modern steel shot into any antique shotgun. Use lead shot, where legal. Use non-toxic bismuth shot, when required for hunting waterfowl.
The walnut stock has some nice figure and is checkered at the wrist and forearm. The buttstock appears to be very sound with no cracks, chips, or repairs. The stock carries well over 100 years of handling marks in the form of various nicks, dings and small scratches. The forearm is fitted with a horn insert that matches the horn buttplate. The top view of this side-by-side shotgun shows the slender profile of the buttstock. Ahead of the checkered wrist, the action lever of the gun is good and tight. The bottom view shows the triggerguard has aged to the same gray brown patina as the barrels.
Both locks are marked Remington Arms Co. The locks work well with rebounding hammers functioning correctly. The action of the gun, originally color case hardened, has aged to a gray brown. Ahead of the action the forend of the shotgun is easily removed by pulling downward on the lever centered in the wood. This action disengages the forend latch from the underside of the barrels allowing it to be pulled off. The forearm and water table have matching serial numbers.
The action locks up solid and both locks function correctly. The bores are bright with only minor pitting. This shotgun should be used with black powder shot shells only.
