The factory polished blued barrel is .54 caliber, 1" octagon, 28" length. The front sight is Thompson Center's blued steel bead sight. The rear sight is click adjustable for elevation, and screw adjustable for windage. The bluing on this rifle is in excellent condition. The bore is bright and clean, with crisp rifling grooves. We recommend our .530" round ball, .015" patch, and Mink Oil tallow patch lubricant, over a charge of 70 grains of GOEX FFg black powder. This rifle pre-dates the QLA muzzle and the bore is rifled all the way to the end of the muzzle.
The American black walnut stock has some scattered dents with a deep dent behind the tang, and additional marks on the side panel and forearm. The stock is stained to a dark brown with reddish undertone and finished to a satin sheen. The buttplate, patchbox, nosecap, and triggerguard have all aged to a mellow patina. Our top view shows the hooked breech of the barrel, which can be dismounted by removing the ramrod and wedge key, for easy cleaning. The wood ramrod is fitted with brass tips. The rear tip is threaded 10-32 to accept loading and cleaning accessories. The ramrod is retained by two round brass pipes. The single lock bolt has a round brass washer-style side plate. The beaver tail cheek piece is shaped for a right hand shooter.
Our lock view shows the color case hardened percussion lock, factory engraved by Thompson Center. The lock has heavy brown speckling, and the hammer cup has deep pitting. This lock works smoothly, with a strong mainspring, and fly detent to allow the use of double set triggers. The breech is fitted with a stainless steel nipple for No. 11 percussion caps. The set triggers are correctly adjusted, you may cock the lock, or set the trigger, in any sequence. Turn the tiny set trigger adjustment screw, between the two triggers, inboard to reduce the set trigger release tension. Or turn it fully inboard, to disable the set trigger feature, when hunting in very cold climates, where a numb finger might release the light set trigger too early.
