The 30-1/2" barrels are nominally 0.685" at the muzzle. Both bores are scrubbed mostly bright with some scattered pitting visible. The right hand barrel has a rough spot near the breech that want to grab a cleaning patch. The exterior of the Damascus barrels are finished to a brown with a gloss finish. A small brass bead serves as the front sight. The breech is lightly engraved and inlaid with a gold band. The upper rib is inlaid in gold J.D. Hartmann in Hamburg. The tang is neatly hand engraved.
The shotgun is stocked in European walnut with a checkered wrist and forearm. The stock has been cracked from the breech down toward the locks and repaired with epoxy. The repair is very visible on both sides of the stock. You can see how much the design of the late 19th century English gunmakers influenced modern shotguns with buttstock shape. The buttplate is wide, nearly flat to spread the felt recoil over a large area. The buttplate has a silvery brown patina and has been shaped with a long stepped comb that is expertly hand engraved. The wrist is checkered to provide the shooter with a secure grip. The checkering has a well handled appearance. The barrels are secured to the forearm with a single captured wedge key. We could not get the breech to dismount from the tang. It may be rusted together, or may have been glued together.
The rounded toe of the stock has a brown epoxy filled hole behind the triggerguard. The bow of the triggerguard is engraved with a dogs flushing a pheasant. The pineapple finial triggerplate and ramrod entry pipe are both expertly hand engraved. The ramrod passes through two pipes that are soldered to the bottom barrel rib. The tapered ramrod is not original and does not have any tips fitted
The front action locks have aged to a dark gray patina. The right hand hammer has some slight play on the tumbler. The left hand hammer is secure. Both locks sound crisp with secure half cock and full cock notches. The right hand hammer has chipping on the cup face from antique percussion caps. The nipples in the breech appear to rusted in place. We did not attempt to dismount them.
